Can anyone tell me whether I can use my australian 3GS iphone in the US using a US local prepaid SIM?

Hi

You should have no problems with using a local SIM card in your iphone
as long as it is not locked to an Australian network (you could be looking
at unlock fees here first before using in the US), SIM cards are generally
available at network shops (IE Verizon/T Mobile etc, just like Telstra shops), however you may want to look at purchasing a complete phone
2nd phone (with US SIM card) while your in the US, it may save a bit
of time and hassle + it gives you a phone for next time you travel to the
US ;).
I thought of the doing the same thing with my iphone and this is the result:

1: SIM card only with $10 credit, $ 40 US thru T Mobile (New York City),

2: Phone & SIM card (Motorola flip) US $ 20 thru Radio Shack (Wash, DC)
includes lifetime same call rates as at time of purchase

Go figure, have fun ;)

Welcome to AFF!

You sure can...

as long as your iPhone is unlocked (able to use any carrier's SIM). I recommend AT&T prepaid as even though their reception is not the best they are the iPhone carrier in the US and have good phone/data plans for prepaid.

AT&T do not offer pre-paid data plans for iPhone, and only tiny allowances for Blackberry.

*edit*
looks like the Blackberry ones are gone too.

From the AT&T pre-paid site:

Additional Messaging and Data Charges: Pay-Per-Use Charges (overage or non-plan pricing): Text/Instant Messaging $0.20 per message; Picture/Video Messages $0.30 per message; Web browsing $2 per MB applies to new customers or customers who change voice plans or cancel data plans on or after July 31, 2009, otherwise $0.01 per KB.

AT&T Go Phone pre-paid is at http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/go-phones/pyg-plans-phones.jsp?wtSlotClick=1-002E4H-0-1&WT.svl=title&_requestid=180176

Shop around and find a pre-paid SIM, but data you're better off finding a wifi spot (T-Mobile has plenty of them, and there is some free t-mobile hotspot access to be had if one searches).

How did you get the phone? If you bought it straight up from Apple and paid for it in full then it will be unlocked. If you bought it on a plan or via one of the telcos then it will be locked to that telco and you'll need to get them to unlock it (which usually means a fee).

I'm heading over to the states soon and have been looking at this very question...

T-Mobile's Even More Plus Plans look good if you're there for any substantial amount of time. Only EDGE data speeds however... :(

Careful with AT&T, when you register your SIM, don't put your iphones IMEI number in because AT&T will block the data if they recognise an iphone. Rather, put in an IMEI from an old phone you may own and then slip the sim in the iphone and you'll get data. You can google this for more information, and i suggest you do. there are plenty of blogs out there with this kinda information in them!

Also check out MrSim (google search them) - they have a iphone USA prepaid sim which looks quite good.

Disclaimer: i don't work for any of the companies mentioned !!

As someone mentioned above, you might be better buying a complete phone and sim from a larger supermarket such as Walmart or Fred Myers. You can pick one up for about $45US for phone/sim and say 100 minutes of air tiime, but be careful as the coverage for some telco service providers is restricted to certain parts of the USA. Even AT&T doesn't cover all the mainland, so check first where you will be travelling and what coverage they offer.

I'm thinking of using mrsimcard. However, a lack of customer reviews is putting me off.

I am also investigating iphonetrip.

Sorry I can't post links.
