Hi AFFers

Have been off the forum for a while because I moved back to England (boo). Apologies in advance for the long question.

Fortunately during my last six months in Aus I managed to accrue a pretty decent amount of velocity points. I am looking to book a trip to south korea in April 2017.

Since i'm looking to use these points, I thought this is a decent length trip to make the most of it (I know i will return to aus for at least a holiday, but I don't know if it will be next year or even the year after).

As both Etihad and Singapore fly to Seoul and are velocity partners and just so happen to have some of the best first class products around from what I have read, i'm very keen to make the most of it and try first class for one leg. Will return in business in order to save some points.

From what I have read, the Etihad apartment is maybe the best first class product around at the mo? Singapore sounds amazing too but Etihad seems to edge it overall. Would everyone agree? So it would seem that EY is a no brainer.

However my issue is that both SQ suites and EY apartments are only available on the A380. From LHR this means just under 7h to abu dhabi and then 9h to seoul on an a340 woth their old first class on EY. On SQ its a nice 13h on the a380 in a suite followed by a much shorter 6h to Seoul in a 777.

This means the experience of the famed EY apartment will "only" be for 6h whereas the SQ suite will be a lovely long 13h so I will really make the most of it.

Because I already have 50k krisflyer miles I will almost certainly do the other leg in SQ business rather than EY, regardless of what I choose.

So which option is worth going for? The miles/time frame isnt really an issue. Have enough points for either and current dates have some flexibility. Availability is there for both (at the moment) and i really don't mind a long layover if it means I can try out a first class lounge!

To give some context... i've flown business twice in my life (the first when our family got a free upgrade when I was 12!) and i've never flown first. I got into the points game this feb, having got fed up with so many long haul flights in Y and not having the bank balance to afford business outright.
In this respect, I'm fully aware that whatever option I choose I will easily have the best flight of my life!

Whilst I accrued an extremely healthy balance of miles in both velocity and qantas, now I'm back in England, the mile earning potential has dropped by about 75%! Will take a good year or more to get enough points for another long haul redemption.
So in that sense i'm saving my points going foreward for business redemptions only. This is likely to be the only first class flight I can see myself taking in the next 3years minimum! Maybe ever.

So which would people recommend? The short experience on the better apartment or the much longer experience on the excellent, but not as good, suite? This is assuming the apartment is definitely better as it seems.

I'd go Singapore every time.
Why?
As you pointed out - 13 glorious hours as opposed to 6 - you will be able to have your fill of Krug, then cos d'estournel with the 7 course dinner and then a nice sleep!
In 6 hours you can only eat or sleep - not both
The EK suites do look fabulous (never been on) and you will really feel exclusive. No doubt about that
I've heard that the EK bed is firm and narrow - the SQ bed is also a separate "pull-down" bed NOT made by reclining your seat and is very, very comfortable
Both EK and SQ smaller aircraft are not as good as the A380 - again I'd opt for the SQ flight.

You do have the luxury of choosing so please enjoy whichever flight you take :D!!

The Apartment is the F best out there, especially if traveling solo but 6 hours is too short to fully experience this brilliant product so in your case I would choose to spend 13 hours in The Suites.
Also, I think SQ flys the new F to ICN which is more appealing than EY A340 F IMO.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Have you thought about buying some points from AA for your EY flights so you could do both?

We are off to Europe via the Maldives in December. We used VA transferred to KF for PER-SIN-MLE then AA for MLE-AUH-LHR then KF for SQ ZRH-SIN-PER.

This was pre the March devaluation so only require 40k AA but it is still a lot cheaper than buying F on the EY380.

With the current bonus you could buy 63,000 AA mile for $1522.50USD which would get you LHR-AUH (or vice versa). There are also AA earning credit cards in the UK so that might be an option too.

Thanks for your thoughts, seems like SQ is the way to go just on the longer flight time... i guess i knew this... just part of me really wanted to try the best F product available, especially as i dont know whether I will fly F again! But 6h really is too short....

SFC i actually already have enough velocity miles to fly both journies in F, i'm just more concerned with saving my miles for future flights and business class redemptions/upgrades. Especially as the point earning potential is dramatically lower in UK (e.g. the best sign on bonus for a credit card in the UK is amex platinum... gets you 30k MR points for a fee of £450....). A first class flight for 1500 USD is definitely good value but im trying to save money for the trip. Also 1.5k USD is a lot more in GBP now than even a week ago :-/.

There's one card to earn AA miles here which is an mbna card, that doesnt even have a sign up bonus. The only other way would be transferring spg points.
