Are sealed 1.5 litre bottles of water allowed through security? I don't really want to have to fork out $7 for a bottle of water at Perth International Airport once we've gone through security, since I just bought some 1.5 litre bottles at the supermarket for 75 cents each. I'm pretty sure last time we went anywhere from Perth International (August 2008) there was nowhere to fill a water bottle, except from the handbasin in the toilets. We need to have a decent amount of water as my husband suffers seriously from ear pain and he usually drinks at least one litre of water during descent. Those small glasses of water on the plane just don't help.

If flying international then NO as LAGS rules apply. Domestic in Australia you can carry whatever liquid you like.

Cheers

What's the big deal if it clearly has an unbroken seal? I took an empty bottle through security last time and wanted to fill it at the water dispenser...but none of them were working. Looks like we'll again be paying the robbers at the shop $7 once we've gone through security. Why don't the LAGS rules apply to domestic flights as well?

The problem is that you claim it is water, but it would not be overly difficult for someone with ill-intent to pay someone at a bottling plant to create a one off bottle with some other liquid in it...
Of course the question could be asked, if it was really a threat then why doesn't LAG restrictions also apply to Dom flights, but that's a whole other thread.

Perth International does have one water dispenser / bottle reflll station outside the bathrooms. Taking empty bottles through security is permitted.

:)

PAL434 is a very good example as to how a clear liquid could really well be anything...

Through domestic ok... altho I have been asked to swig from an opened bottle I had.

Int still no go. Unfortunate, but will change in the future when more magical xrays get rolled out.

Maybe domestic passengers and crew aren't as important as international ones?

Going right OT, I tried three travel agencies today to get some departure cards. One told me they only give them to people who have booked with them (her tone implied that they pay $25 per card to get them), the other two said they don't get sent departure cards anymore. My mum went to one travel agent last week and was told departure cards are available online. Darned if I can find them. I always prefer to fill the thing out before I get to the checkin desk.

If you're flying international, then NO. Take the empty bottle through security then fill on the other side (in fact, you and hubby could take one each). I've just come back from 7 weeks flying USA and Canada and still have the original bottle.

Last Saturday, a friend told me that they went through security in HK (I think), then bought water airside. However, a special full security check was run as they were about to board and all bottles were confiscated.

As I book most of my flights online (hence avoiding TAs), I grabbed about 50 departure cards the last time I went through Sydney airport as I too always fill them out before I travel.

Recent government change.
The TAs are not happy

Government explores passenger card plan | Travel Weekly

On the website comment - "While not downloadable for use – the samples are for “educational purposes” - agents can demonstrate to consumers how the cards should be completed, she said"

What I don't get is why the airline - using my passport details electronic strip can't prefil my name, date of birth, flight ....
then all I need to do is the check boxes and sign.

That said I can normally fill one out in the time it take an agent to check me in.

why pay someone to do that. Very easy to buy plastic home brew bottles and new caps, voila sealed bottle.

They have a Passenger Card Steering Committee??? And they worry about card wastage?

Qantas used to do this - around the turn of the century First class check-in would supply pre-printed (semi filled) departure cards. ;)

I thought the f hosts still do this for cl and genuine f passengers checking in at syd or mel?

Theyre correct, they government are no longer sending departure cards to TA's, if they had some its because they either had stock left over or theyve got them direct at the airport.

Nothing special about it. Gate hand luggage checks in HKG have been happening for some time. This also ensures that any alcohol purchased there is surrendered to security as well (although the shops should advise you cannot purchase booze for flights to AU; they claim it's an AU government directive, I claim it's a conspiracy with Nuance; the duty free company responsible for our over-priced duty free offering here at most AU airports).

It's strange however that they don't have the gate LAG's check at any other int airport which I've flown out of, and when flying from HKG to another outside AU port they don't have gate LAG checks either...

I almost have to wonder if it's a miscommunication, as I do know that QF has in the past done gate LAG checks at int airports which do not enforce LAG checks at security.

I concur it's probably either an outdated rule or mis-communication, but with the price of Duty Free here I like to believe it's a conspiracy (I took QF30 back from LHR last year and the Duty Free people there made me sign a disclaimer stating that if my alcohol was confiscated in transit they would not be responsible, as they do not allow Australia-bound flights to take DF Alcohol aboard; needless to say, the booze made it home just fine, after being told that we were welcome to leave items in the overhead lockers during transit, something i've done many times).

It would be nice if the powers-that-be of all the airports and respective aviation security agencies actually interacted with each other on a regular basis, and made rules that were coherent and consistent, but that's a utopia ;)

Intl pax at BKK & HKT. Are having their airside purchased water removed too at the gate. Correct as of oct when I last flew through there. Makes zero sense but don't bother arguing with nonsensical govt policy.....aka steering committees overseeing the use of bits of paper.

BTW how do I get a job on one of these useless committees? I'd love to be paid to sit around inventing ways to shuffle bits of paper around and make it look important. I'm pretty sure I could justify some J class travel at taxpayers expense while I do this....
