Hi All,

Looking at flights to LAX for the end of April. Currently ANZ Y+ flights are priced the same as VA flexis.

Question is, would you rather take the risk and go on a 'waitlist' for a J upgrade with VA or go for a OneUP bid to J with ANZ with the comfort of knowing you you have a Y+ spaceseat if it does fail.
Will re-qualify for WP this year anyway so the PE SC dont really matter.

Cheers,

Will

Given the superior seat that Air New Zealand offer in Y+, I'd go for that option personally (2-2-2 is a far superior layout to 2-4-2).

Additionally, only 1 in 4 flights to LAX on VA in April feature the new J seats. The old style seats are no match for Air New Zealand's current offering.

Tricky one there. I'd tend to agree that NZ PE space seat is really good. Not everyone seems to love it, but if you get one of the middle seats, it's basically all-aisle with no one climbing over you. Otherwise, the window seats are really nice and private. For the price, it's not a bad way to get to the US at all.

That said, I'd probably go with VA and waitlist for J (or worst case, PE) since I reckon being WP might go a bit further, plus I tend to prefer the crews on VA over NZ. With top status, your odds are probably pretty good (assuming the loads aren't 100%) but that's just speculation.

Good luck! Hope you end up in a J or PE seat!

You raise an excellent point - the success of waitlisting for upgrades to LAX is something I'd love to get some information on!

I disagree on the space seat. They are uncomfortable and of limited recline. Agree the centre two are best, but generally, the seat is not very comfortable.
I have flown in them about 8 times

Proving mrsmart's point! I personally like the seat, but I've read on here a lot that it's a very polar product - you either love it or hate it. If you're not a fan, try to get on a 772 refit or a 789, which use the leather armchair in PE. I see that there are 772s on the AKL-LAX run, so perhaps try for one of those if spaceseat isn't your thing. Careful though, Y+ is a 2-4-2 config.

Of course I haven't tried business yet, so I'll get back to you on that next month!

Personally I think the smart move is to book the product that you're happy with, upgrades being a bonus.

That's what I've heard. Personally I love the space seat.

One flight I dozed off after dinner and woke up as the lights came on for breakfast as we approached Auckland. It's rare I do that even in Business.

With the space seat if you are 175-185cm tall you would generally fit very well.

Shorter and you slip down, longer and you are skew wiff.

Best sleep I had was on a center pair when the other was vacant ... fetal position wrapped around the bend ... reversing direction every few hours. Generally good sleep (for a transpac).

Note that the refurbed 772 don't have them - being done a more conventional seat - word is they will be removed from the 77W sooner or later. ...

I'll be really sad to seem them gone. Genuinely innovative seats for PE. All they need is more legroom and you have a really solid high-density business lite.

You missed the part where the PE leather chairs are 2-4-2. The reason they're removing the spaceseat is sadly obvious - they're not high density enough.

more leg room?

The original layout had 6 inches less ... after months of complaints they had to take a row out!

We did a bid return BNE-LAX last June no probs at all and there was 4 of us travelling. On return flight hubby even had window seat and the isle seat next to him vacant.
