I'm with Juddles on this one. Media irresponsibility and hype to sell newspapers. I would much rather get Zika than Dengue for example which is far more common in Australia

Oh sure I agree with you Mark3000 which is why I use a moderator of all information that is located © in between my ears :

Given the virus seems to have mutated so that transmission is possible without the vector, just maybe it is a different beast now.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito primarily responsible for spreading these diseases has been called “the coughroach of mosquitoes.” It thrives around people, particularly in the densely packed neighborhoods that are common in the tropics. It bites during the day and hides at night in dark corners, including in closets and under beds. It lays its eggs in flowerpots, sewers and any container holding water, from barrels and buckets to discarded bottle caps and tires. The eggs c

No SEX please new travel advice:
MEN who have travelled to countries hit by the outbreak of Zika virus should abstain from sex or use condoms if their partner is pregnant, the federal Health Department says in new advice.

As there have been two cases of probable sexual transmission of Zika from men to their sexual partners in the US, precautions should be taken after travel to Zika areas, according to a suite of interim recommendations from Australian health authorities.

Experts say that, whether or not they have symptoms, men who have returned from areas with ongoing Zika transmission should abstain from coughl, cough or oral sex, or consistently use condoms, for the duration of their partner’s pregnancy.

Men who have had a confirmed Zika virus infection should abstain from all sexual activity or consistently use condoms for three months after resolution of the symptoms, even if their partner is not pregnant.

The advice includes algorithms for testing pregnant women with and without symptoms if they have a history of potential exposure to the Zika vi

CÚCUTA, Colombia—As a young doctor practicing in a rural town in the country’s sweltering northeast, 25-year-old Karina Andrea Luque immediately recognized the symptoms of the mosquito-borne Zika virus when they hit her in January.
The pink rash and joint pain passed in a few days. But as she was seeing patients about two weeks later, her mouth began to lose its ability to form words. A tingling sensation spread up her arms. A day later she was in intensive care, scarcely able to move her legs or fully open her eyes. Guillain-Barré syndrome, in which the immune system attacks nerves, causing temporary but potentially severe paralysis. Research published in the journal the Lancet on Feb. 29 confirmed a link between Zika and Guillain-Barré.

She felt fortunate because she could still breath. !!

Connecticut woman who traveled to Central America and became pregnant while there has tested positive for the Zika virus, the state Department of Public Health said Tuesday.
Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that has been linked(for certain?) to devastating birth defects. Tuesday's case is the third confirmed case in Connecticut and the first involving a pregnant woman.

Travel to Brazil ??

The Rio Olympic Games must not proceed — that is the warning from an international health expert who says the Zika virus poses a bigger threat than many authorities are willing to admit.

This week the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) issued a statement saying "athletes can head to Rio with confidence, knowing the appropriate measures are in place against Zika".

At the same time an article published in the Harvard Public Health Review, by Professor Amir Attaran of Ottawa University, warned Zika was flourishing in the Brazilian capital and posed the potential for a global catastroph

Really.Cancel the Olympics due to Zika?
There are much higher risks.Dengue is also prevalent in Brazil.10-20000 die of dengue each year world wide.Severe dengue haemorrhagic fever and shock was first described in Central and South America.
A pregnant woman infected with dengue may pass the virus to her unborn child.Severe dengue is more common in infants.Complications of dengue in pregnancy include foetal death, low birth weight and prematurity.
Dengue occurs in Far North QLD.Should we all stop visiting Cairns?
