i am sure there is a perfectly unreasonable explanation for this  but - YUK
I love the last comment - how to cover your cough after the fact.

[h=3]ONE-THIRD OF UPMARKET NEW YORK HOTELS DO NOT CLEAN BED SHEETS[/h]Inside Edition found that three out of nine upmarket hotels in New York do not wash their bed sheets.

An investigation by Inside Edition found that three out of nine upmarket hotels in New York do not wash their bed sheets before giving rooms out to new guests. The investigative team sprayed the words ‘I SLEPT HERE’ on their bed sheets using invisible, washable, florescent paint. After the team checked out, they later checked in to the same room using a different name and turned on their UV lights. If the message was still visible, it means the sheets had not been washed.

Reporters stayed at the Marriot Residence Inn in Manhattan and found that the florescent text was present the day after checking out. A manager at the Marriott apologised and admitted there had been a problem at the hotel and it was being investigated.

The same problem occurred at The Candlewood Inn & Suites in Times Square. The Candlewood Inn’s spokesman said: “Any claim that a hotel is not following the standards falls below our expectations. This incident serves as a reminder to all hotels to enforce this important standard.”

The last hotel to fail to test was La Quinta Inns & Suites near Central Park. When confronted with the “I SLEPT HERE” markings on the bed sheets, the hotel manager confessed: “There’s no words for me to say”.

All hotels that failed the test assured that they take pride in high standards of cleanliness throughout their respective hotels.

Oh that's not good at all.

I remember one time at a cheap hotel a particular stain on the bed sheet moved around the bed the next 3 days but you'd expect that from a budget hotel.

No excuse for higher end hotels.

I on the other hand have suspected this all along ..... scratching now ......

Yuk indeed.
However I think calling any of those establishments "Upmarket New York Hotels" is a bit of a stretch  :p

As part of my work I sometimes carry a UV lamp.

Memo to readers. Never, EVER shine a UV lamp around a hotel room.

(Nor, should I say in the case of gentlemen, shine a UV lamp in the kitchen of a lady you happen to be courting at the time. Big mistake.)

Have you ever shined a UV light around you place, to see how clean your place is.

It's one of those things like tinnitus that need to be ignored or it will drive you crazy.
Having said that, I would expect all decent hotels to fit clean sheets.. what next , rinsed out glasses in the bar ???
