I have booked a WHY award on SQ for Christmas/New Year SYD-SIN-BKK-SIN-SYD for 46,750 KrisFlyer miles and ~$450. I will be on the A380 on the way over and on the B777-300LR on the way back. I have only ever flown SQ short haul SIN-KUL and was not too impressed but I have heard many reports of people rapped in the SQ WHY service. How does it compare to QF WHY service?

I have managed to find my way around the award booking and I have allocated the following seats

SYD-SIN A380-800 - 77G
SIN-BKK B777-200 - 33G
BKK-SIN B777-200 - 33G
SIN-SYD B77-300LR - 33G

I have a stopover in SIN on the way over and ~5 hours transit on the way back. Lounge access should not be a hassle as I am a QF Platinum. Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated....

The original thread had some very good suggestions but it has gone missing in action since the forum had issues last week.

I share your views about SQ's shorter flights (mine were on the 772 as well SIN-BKK..) nothing to write home about there... then again, they are short!

The A380 SYD-SIN I flew when it was a 9:45 am departure (wish it still was....) and was about as good as Y gets I reckon... particularly with Upper Deck seating which you seem to have selected..

Pitch is only 32" but the seats are quite wide for Y (19"?) and i found them quite comfy...

If you can get into row 80 it would be even better.. thats the central block of 4 level with the doors.... noone in front.

Service was excellent.. food was better than average....BUT we were on a flight with only 190 pax total.....

The Y seats on the 777-300 are reportedly the same as the 380's.. (??)

What I wrote in the missing thread not withstanding, have flown that sector on Tiger, MH and SQ. Apart from using LCCTs, Tiger was best on that sector - but that doesn't lead me to conclude I'd prefer Tiger on longer sectors:D. But for 30 mins between the two tarmacs, really didn't matter.

SQ whY is pretty good, same or slightly better room than QF, service in whY... hmmm not the best, i much prefer QF/BA or CX.
Meals in SQ whY can be hit and miss, honestly i have had means that myself and people traveling with me said were not eatable, that has never happened on QF.

But SQ is my preferred non OW carrier, and what i said above is very harsh but everybody seems to thinks they are the best and as far as i am concerned they are simply not. Good but not the best by a long way... maybe years ago.

I couldn't agree with you more on that. they're good but not the best.

Agree that they're good but not necessarily the best.

In my experience, my best SQ flights have not been as good as my best QF flights. On the flipside the worst SQ flight I've been on was miles ahead of my worst QF flight. I'll come back to you in a few months ... have SQ, EK & QF flights in Y on same route (MEL-SIN or vv) all coming up.

I said on the previous version of this thread that IMO SQ and QF are much the same level in Y. There are specificdifferences here and there, but I find the overall experience to be on about the same level.

Been a while since I've flown SQ whY but I've had some nice flights with them. I'd put them on par with QF whY, and if not for the OW miles would fly them ahead of CX any time of the day. SQ isn't all it's cracked up to be but it's still one of the better and more dependable airlines out there.

I do have niggles with the style of service on SQ (FAs aren't v personable) and that if you asked for alcohol on a morning flight or too many times they get a bit funny. But on the whole you could also do a lot worse than SQ.

Wines on SQ whY are generally better than those served on QF whY (hardy's) from what I recall but from time to time you do get some gems on QF whY (Wirra Wirra) which SQ would serve in J!

Maybe some of your comments have been finally filtering back ... The last two (J) flights I've had, the FA's have been smily and chatty and a little less robotic/formal. And as for alcohol ... I managed to have a third Singapore Sling put down on my tray (without asking) ... just as I was finishing the second .... but then again I may have just been lucky with the crew lottery.

The senior crew are much better. Most of the junior crew seem to have a perpetual 'deer in headlight' look. There's a world of a difference in service between LSS (green)/CSS (red) and FSS (blue). In whY, the crew are predominantly FSS, with an LSS supervising the service.

My last experience over Easter (in JCL) was quite mixed. Outbound - the usual faceless style of service. Only juices to go around for pre boarding drinks on MEL-SIN SQ238, and the FS looked at his watch with a smirk on his face before fetching bubbles from the galley when I asked. Inbound - cool, chatty crew (admittedly one of the inbound flights was in FCL :D, sadly it was only a regional HKG-SIN) who couldn't stop piling us with the booze; we did provide elaborate feedback praising the warm and enthusiastic service on the inbound flights.
