What's the longest point to point trip you've done (one way) to get to your destination as a continuous trip (without stopovers on the way)?

When coming over to Europe, I realised that I did book myself a very sub-optimal trip - "time in transit" wise: 43 hours door to door. I could easily have done it in about 30 hours, too. But it was as a bearable trip as they can be.

Depart home 0800 (AEST/UTC+10), QF81 SYD-SIN departs 1150. A catch-up with a friend in SG before connecting to QF1 (scheduled 2330), in LHR connecting to AY1332, arriving in HEL a little late and combined with bag delivery being slower than usual, missed my intercity train. Lucky they go every hour and the next one still had seats available. Then the local transport to my accommodation, arriving at 2000 (UTC+3). All in all 43 hours.

What's been a long one way trip for you?

Well it was part of a xONEx but
PER-SYD-LAX-JFK-SJU Don't remember the stopover times but I think SYD was the longest at about 5-6 hours

So just a small part of the total wandering (but a nice stop in San Juan)

I’ve done nothing longer than Sydney to Rome with a 5am to 9pm wait in Frankfurt.
A mate did once get F rewards upgrades on flights from Sydney to Belgium via London … overnight to Hong Kong, spent a full day with friends, another overnight to Heathrow, spent another full day with friends, then a final flight to Brussels. I’ve not added that up, but it’d have to be pretty lengthy - and dunno if it counts. :)

Day trip to LAX all on the same day (local time):
5:55-9:15 BNE-MEL
Had just enough time to run an errand before heading back to the airport
13:10-8:45 MEL-LAX (same flight as @serfty on that fateful day in 2014)
Spent the day with a friend including a visit to Getty Centre
23:20-6:25+2 LAX-BNE
Straight to work

I was thinking this might be about the furthest point on earth you've been from your home town. I was in Iceland last month and thought this was about as far as you can get from Sydney. But the earth is a sphere and it's an extra couple of thousand km to get to The Azores off Portugal. Ponta Delgada is 19 489km from Sydney and you can squeeze a few more km heading to the outer islands.

But back on topic I flew to Raleigh SC back in the early 2000s which felt like about as far. SYD-LAX, hours of waiting, LAX to ORD (Chicago) long wait, ORD to RDU. So not as long a flying time as some but with the long waits it seemed like a couple of days between leaving home and arriving in Raleigh. Never again.

Our longest was from Halifax Nova Scotia to Perth. We had flown into Toronto on CX so had to get back to there. The first leg was on Air Canada in Y and then CX in J for the Toronto - HK and HK - Per legs. As the AC flight was on a separate ticket I left a lot of leeway in Toronto for the connection. Naturally the CX flight out of Toronto was delayed by about 90 minutes so we spent around 7 hours at Toronto. We then had a 9 hour stopover in HK but at least we could use the CX Pier lounge. To stretch the trip out even longer there was a severe storm in HK and we sat on board the plane for more than an hour waiting for a take-off slot. Altogether we spent nearly 28 hours in the air. From setting foot in Halifax Airport to exiting Perth Airport was about 46 hours.

According to the "Antipodes Map" the opposite point on Earth to Perth is just north of Bermuda so we weren't far away in Halifax.

One way with no bed in between?

Jindabyne house --car--Sydney home--taxi--SYD T1--KUL--CDG--train--Gare du Nord--train--Chambery--train--Bourg St Maurice--bus--Les Arc--hotel room

Y

About 48 hrs door to door.
At that time Mst QS1 and Mst QS2 were 5 and Miss QS was 7 and they came along......

To be fair I think any travel in Y should have a duration adjustment factor of x2, J x1, and F 0.5
Travelling with young kids adjustment factor x5 per kid

Flight adjustment +20hrs
Kids adjustment (3x5) = 15

(48+20)x15 = 1020 hrs. 🤣

Been a few I can think of that stick out in my brain as long (?stupid…..). I’m sure they can easily be “beaten” on AFF.

Longest at the time was probably JFK-HEL (arr HEL ~0800 dep 2350) - SIN then 5.5hr in the QP in SIN then SIN-MEL was pretty rough (although I enjoyed the day in Helsinki). All I wanted on the last leg was sleep and the cabin crew were stuffing around for ages with ”supper” (after midnight local…..) and then full lights on for “breakfast” about 3.5hr later. Urgh. Turned around for MEL-SYD-SIN-LHR-MAD (3 days) MAD-LHR-PER-MEL again 5 days later later too.

Another long one directly connecting through was DRW-BNE-MEL-HKG-LHR-CDG. Preceeded by morning meetings in DRW first of course. And dinner on arrival into Paris. Was ”amusing” around 2am DRW time as we flew virtually straight back over DRW around 15hrs after i left…..

MEL-LAX-DFW-YVR all direct connecting was pretty brutal for some reason - don’t think the timezone in eastward direction change helped.

Do you count going home and leaving again within 3 hrs? If so JFK-LAX-SYD-MEL-SYD-BKK. About 42 hrs, with the longest layover the 3 hrs at home.

Another one leaving Cuzco early morning CUZ-LIM-LAX-MEL with about 15-16 hrs each in LIM and LAX during the day (so no hotel room).

I thought my DFW-HEL (11 hour stopover)-HKG (7 hour stopover)-SYD-CBR trip earlier this year was long until I read some of the earlier posts here.

I was lucky enough to travel J class, had a great day in Helsinki with a sauna in the lounge, and a great break in the first lounge in HKG! Loved every minute of it!

So longest more time than distance. Back in the mid 90s I was working in Oman. After a stint there I headed home to Canberra and it only took two days, all in economy and no lounge access until I got back to Australia - I was Ansett Golden Wing back then. The trip was MCT-DXB-SIN-PER-MEL-CBR, with 3-8 hours at each stop over.

The worst bit was arriving into Perth just before midnight with the flight at 7am. I was prepared to sleep in the terminal, but it shut at midnight and didn't reopen until 6am. Everyone was turfed out on the street, including a family and others who had flown in from internal WA flights. Me and another fellow traveller set out to find a place for a coffee and a snack, and on the recommendation of the taxi driver headed off to the casino, only to be refused entry as we wearing jeans. Rather than heading down to Freo we went back to the old International Terminal for a very expensive coffee and cake.

But the worst (and funniest) was to come. I got to Melbourne ok and onto the flight to Canberra. I had been catching up on the local news and read about Bronwyn Bishop pulling out her mobile phone in the air, to try and contact people after her flight into Canberra was delayed due to fog. 15 minutes out of Canberra we went into a holding pattern and the pilot announced there was fog in Canberra and we would hold for up to 20 minutes, and then if we couldn't land, continue to Sydney. More than a few people were saying "Where is Bronwyn Bishop when you need her?" The flight attendant in our area commented that she was on that flight and it wasn't pretty. Thankfully the fog cleared enough for us to get in.

This was due to crew hours exceeded due to fog diversion at SYD by UA. But it ended up -
CBR - SYD UA flight cancelled rebooked on HA wait 12 hours
SYD - HNL wait 6 hours
HNL - DFW, connecting plane went u/s wait 3 hours
DFW - IAD.

All up about 40 hours

Did TPE-xHKG-xDXB-LHR a while back (CX-CX-BA). "Deliberately" did a long transit in DXB as we had never been before - arrived off a red-eye from HKG at 6am, and departed on a red eye the next "morning" at around 2am. Total time between TPE departure to LHR arrival was a bit over 41 hours.

Felt a bit unwell afterwards most likely due to a combination of the long travel time and the combination of very hot Dubai weather and cold airport/plane temperature. Would have been better to do a stopover, but we had already maxed out our stopovers within the OWA rules.

Raleigh, NC, the Carolinians might get upset!
