Trying to get up to CNS from PER in November. Trying to work in the transcon as a J upgrade from Flexi and noticed its actually cheaper for me to buy a flexi CNS-BNE-PER ($411) than BNE-PER ($569) for the same flight number on the same day out of BNE ...

73H J never excites me so no interest in upgrading any but the transcon leg. Was going to book a saver CNS-BNE then Flex out of BNE ... but its actually more expensive for me to do it this way ... better to reap the extra SC's on a flexi right through, save $150 odd and get a 'free' flight CNS-BNE in the bargain ... weird, just weird.

Theres no direct service, which is whats making me scratch my head. One will always go CNS-BNE-PER or CNS-SYD-PER or even CNS-MEL-PER (which is cheaper than the BNE option!! Go figure).

For the example I was thinking of when I posted, CNS-BNE VA786, then BNE-PER VA474 ... $150 cheaper than simply BNE-PER VA474 ...Its the _same_ flight out of BNE.

As I say ... yield management, who can understand it??? Not me. Its all good though, cheaper on the pocket and more SC's (than a saver which is what I was going to buy CNS-BNE).

You have to be careful for sure but there are a significant number of flights on the 332. Looks like weekends are serviced by 73H only. I've done this before and its a long long trip on the small jet.

I have found give or take a couple of dollars it is the same price to do Syd - Gold Coast on saver lite then Gold Coast - Mel - Perth Flexi than it is Syd - Perth on Flexi.

Airlines do this all the time. They price the city pairs rather than the entire routing. CNS is mostly leisure travellers and hence more price sensitive than BNE, they also then need to compete against JQ pricing. BA does similar with ex-EU pricing cheaper than ex-LON, even though it involves extra flights. Some choose to book such routes for the cheaper price and then drop the last leg... This has been a good little status run for Perth residents, probably after the Busselton runs. My partner & I travelled via Mel to Cns over the Easter long weekend & returning via Bne clocking up a total 280 status points for only $820 each. Good reason to visit Cairns & take advantage of their new lounge. Gold Coast is another good status run.

And Jetstar flies nonstop between Cairns and Perth, so for many punters this would be the better way to travel :shock: (So Virgin's pricing CNS-xx_-PER needs to take this into account.)

Are there any other examples of this in the current VA world ? A while back (pre - Tiger BNE/DRW) VA Brisbane to Darwin going via Sydney was cheaper than BNE - DRW direct ....it's no longer the case though. As per the OP noted a weird weird world
