I am a QC Silver and have purchased a Y+ ticket SYD-HKG and have requested an upgrade to J.

Will higher status FFs have priority for upgrades if they have only purchased Y tickets?

I believe Y+ -> J has precedence over Y -> J (although I have no proof of this).

On my reading of the T&Cs, I would say that platinum has priority, even starting from Y.
Don't know about gold as it's not mentioned as a benefit.
I'm not saying it's necessarily fair, just my interpretation.

"Platinum members will have their successful International upgrade requests confirmed where possible from up to 48 hours prior to departure which is earlier than Gold, Silver and Bronze Frequent Flyers. Successful upgrades may be confirmed via SMS#."

Y+->J does not take precedence over Y->J as far as I know. They see how many seats are free for upgrade in J and then give them to requested upgrades to J from any cabin ranked in order of status. Within each status group the ranking is a bit of a mystery and hotly debated on here.

Yes but cost of the original fare is one of the factors supposedly taken into account, and most Y+ fares are higher than discount Y...

fare bucket of travel certainly plays it's part, post status divisions.

Then within whatever group of the above where the seats run out will then sort based on fare bucket.

However there are variables and scenarios based around upgrades to the various classes.

I.e no point upgrading all the Y+'s to J with nobody in Y wanting to upgrade to Y+ but plenty wanting to go to J etc.
