Y+ or J upgrade on points

I'm flying SYD-DFW in September returning October WHY both ways and have received one of the upgrade offers. At present, the offer is Y+ or J both ways. I've applied to upgrade to J but wondering about the Y+ upgrade.

Is there much difference between WHY and Y+ on long haul?

Should I also apply for the Y+ upgrade or be prepared to suffer in WHY?

I'm conserving my points, hence the question.

Y+ is definitely better than Y and you've got nothing to lose by applying for both upgrades.

What opusman said. While I haven't flown QF Y+ I've read enough reports to indicate it is a worthwhile alternative to Y.

I've never flown Y+, in my worklife it was whY by decree but now retired so it's always J international - but anything has to be better than whY .

I think if I were in your situation, I'd try Y+ one way and J the other to see how you want to spend the hard-earned in the future.

Y+ is worth it on long haul as far as I am concerned. QF Y+ is not bad at all. Better seats, food, and service.

Definitely go for the upgrade. Y+ has the wider seats and recline enough to have a good sleep. I'm 6'9" and manage maybe 4 hours in WHY but coming back from LAX last year in Y+ managed 8 hours easy and very comfortable. Agree with other posts service is better, drinks before takeoff, nice shankets (sheets and blanket together). Good luck with the upgrades!

If you have status and can select the Y+ seats sold as economy, there is little point in applying for a Y+ upgrade unless you can score a biz class seat being sold as Y+.

Economy passengers sitting in the Y+ section already get noise cancelling headphones and the nice blankets. The only difference between them and the paying passengers sitting in Y+ seats were the meals and drink selection.

Even if you don't have status, the Y+ seats 9sold as economy) seem to open up a few days before departure for general selection.

If you can get a Y+ upgrade, AND a seat in the biz cabin (used for Y+) then worthwhile. But those seats may already be taken by passengers with status able to select them in advance.

Its a 4 class aircraft, but only 3 classes are sold. (you can search elsewhere for more detail...)

essentially the First class cabin is used for business, as well as the upper deck and the big downstairs biz cabin. If you are lucky you get to sit in F seats but with biz service.

The smaller biz cabin (2 rows) is used for Y+. As well as one row of actual Y+ seating. So if you are lucky enough, you score a biz class seat (with y+ service).

The rest of the plane (including the large Y+ cabin) is all used for economy. so again, lucky enough you get to sit in a Y+ seat but with economy service (except, you get the noise cancelling headphones).

On some services, a few seats from a higher class are sold as lower-class inventory.

For example, on the SYD/BAS service, first class seats are all sold as business class (there is no first class service), the back 2 rows of the business cabin are sold as premium economy, and the back couple of rows of premium economy are sold as economy seats. Exactly the same price, exactly the same service, just better seats than most of the other passengers in your class. Qantas don't really draw attention to this so you have to study the seat maps for the plane flying your route to work it out (and even then, it can change before the actual flight).

QF is in the process of doing away with First Class on a few of it's routes, so is selling tickets for J, Y+ and Y. In the cases where the aircraft has not been refitted you might find that the aircrafts has F, J, Y+, and Y.

As an FF with status, I'm not sure whether that is SG and WP, you are able to select a seat that is actually a class above the one you booked. e.g. if you booked economy you may find that you are able to select a seat in the last couple of rows of Y+.

I'm heading over to Buenos Aries next month and am booked in J. The aircraft is a four class 747, but the flight has been sold as 3 class. I was able to select seat 1A for the journey. This is an F seat. I will receive J class service though.

This quirk will come to an end when QF refits its aircraft.

Can anyone tell me if this is why I see a weird seat selection on a flight I have booked - I am flying on QF016 from LAX to BNE in October in business class. When I do my seat selection, it is letting me choose row 4 - but this looks like a first class row. I didn't want to select it because I thought I would just get moved anyway.

Qantas often put a F cabin on the BNE flights now that they have them spare, so it's likely to be a F seat with J service. There is no First class fares sold ex BNE.

That's really good info MEL_Traveller. As a fresh PS, I was able to select Y+ seats for a recent SIN-FRA leg, and was wondering why they were available. Even better was the fact that my brother and I were travelling on award tickets, so it really was a bonus (except no noise cancelling headphones). All my other award tickets, even now with status, have me down the back.

However its now, according to the seat map, a three class aircraft (4 seats in row 1 instead of 2), so I abandoned row 4 and switched upstairs. Good luck!Cheers skip

Hey bluenblonde,

When you are on the "select your flights" screen of the booking engine, you can click the hyperlink on the flight number (e.g. QF1) and it opens a pop-up window. Down the bottom where it says aircraft type, select view aircraft/ seat map and it will give you an option of seating configuration maps. There's usually a few different configuration possibilities, so as far as I am aware, you can really only tell when you do your advance seat selection or at OLCI. Compare the row numbers from the seating configuration maps to those available for your flight. Our enlightened AFF sages could probably correct me if I'm leading you astray here...

Also check if First class fares are offered on that flight at your time of booking. If they aren't, and you luck out and get the 4-class configuration, that's when the sweet seats start to be a possibility! (edit: albeit a slim possibility!)
