I have heard the rumour for a number of months . Time will tell.

Yep, surely flight times for VA81 and VA82 didn't just plop out from someones imagination (although this is the internet so maybe i'm wrong). Who knows maybe Virgin will shock everyone by doing both MEL-HKG and SYD-HKG. Only time will tell.

Interesting! And nothing's showing up for HKG-MEL as yet.

A 09:40 MEL-HKG departure wouldn't be so good for connections from elsewhere in Australia though. What's MCT in MEL for a VA-VA domestic-international connection?

Armchair-airline-strategy wise it's probably best to have both Sydney and Melbourne flights to hong kong. Sydney's departure would meet the demands of Australia's main business city, Melbourne's departure works well for morning connections such as from Adelaide and Hobart (and from what I've read would be a better experience too for transfers). Hong Kong Airlines Gold Coast and Cairns flights would probably cover Queensland. VA could probably cut another A330 route to do the two city Hong Kong strategy (they have a fondness for that), probably Fiji. HNA did bring in a substantial amount of capital and they weren't even the ones that bought up AirNZ's share so maybe this is their way of shaping VAs future.

Smoke turns to haze though. Maybe this is just Virgins future planning and for some reason they've been punched into the systems even though no intention to sell the other city's flights until demand has been determined.

Oh for sure... you couldn't reliably connect anything to a 09:40 out of SYD on a weekend, with the first flight from even MEL arriving at 08:25.

Seems to have changed again, now showing the following:

VA86 MEL0940 - 1720HKG D (This appears strange as the block time is 75 minutes longer than CX and QF - could daylight savings be involved?)

VA87 HKG1950 - 0720+1MEL D (This also appears strange as the block time about 50/55 minutes less than CX and QF)

I'd say whatever was loaded as a test is rolling off day by day. Few more and the flights will be gone.

The MEL schedule is definitely putting into account for daylight savings.

Looks like MEL to HKG is going to be the new VA route (daily service plus reasonable schedule time). SYD to HKG is down to a Sunday only 'service' with a 'departure time' of 01:35.

There is still 2 flights in there for SYD-HKG, although to be honest it is only really 1 , as the 1.35am departure can be totally discarded as its not possible.
