Hi guys

Was trying to find how long a flight from Sydney to Hong Kong takes and found the attached.

Not sure where google pulls its data from. Information seems a bit wrong though because VA80 would mean departing after Sydney's curfew, although VA81/VA82 is more or less a match-up with CX110/CX111. Googling 'Virgin Australia 80' (or 81 or 82) also brings up a schedule.

Searching Virgin Australia's scheduling brings up nothing either. Searching anything online didn't seem to bring up anything.

Thoughts?

Nothing like this listed recently on routesonline.com which tends to be pretty good at covering published changes

VA80 as it stands on that list is wrong. Curfew will have something to say about that departure time. VA81 the return HKG-SYD according to Google matches up with the timing for VA82. It's still early days though and there's something glitchy going on.

Exactly what i was thinking regarding the VA81 and VA82. Only time can tell if this glitch is an accidental slip of SYD-HKG or the 'rumours from a stewardess' about MEL-HKG is true. The timing for the hypothetical VA81 seems to be quite early but makes sense if connecting on Hong Kong Airlines to its various destinations, same goes with its hypothetical reversal.

From 13-March from one link... clearly an error (and I suspect the same source as Google)

Not going to fly planes with no seats sold

As they say, where there is smoke........

Some things of note -

a) I would have assumed that the outbound flight numbers would be odd numbers if the VA standard flight numbering is to be maintained.
b) Flight numbers using the number 8 would be expected.
c) I assume slot times in HKG must govern the arrival time, as a later arrival would reduce the aircraft turnaround time between VA82 and VA81 in HKG.

An interesting find for a Sunday afternoon.

So I did a bit more sleuthing, and found the below pictures.

They all come from Velocity FF>Redeem>Airlines>Points Tables 's mileage calculator.

Not sure what to make of this, but in my opinion likelihood is inching closer to a SYD-HKG route.

Interesting pick up!

Though an alternate theory might be that its a legacy of the many years that virgin atlantic had a direct route in the system and its still there for some reason?

They won't sell tickets till the ACCC gives interim authroisation (expected 20 March). In the meantime, things will happen in the GDS in preparation.....

Planning dude #1: hey, let's load it as SYD-HKG...
Planning dude #2: and let's put SYD-HKG onto the Velocity earning table!
Planning dude #1: ... but run times which are outside SYD curfew, that'll get them running around in circles. And tomorrow, let's change it to be a MEL-SYD-BNE- HKG tag, hahahahahaha

Yeah, the Velocity site has always shown SYD-HKG mileage as far as I can remember -- since the VS days at least, like you said!

re: [Wrong] Sydney to Hong Kong VA80 & VA82

I personally think there is some substance to this. We shall see though. Nice find.

re: [Wrong] Sydney to Hong Kong VA80 & VA82

Oh, there is indeed substance to it, I would just suggest that we're just not seeing the complete picture just yet.

re: [Wrong] Sydney to Hong Kong VA80 & VA82

Yep, surely flight times for VA81 and VA82 didn't just plop out from someones imagination (although this is the internet so maybe i'm wrong). Who knows maybe Virgin will shock everyone by doing both MEL-HKG and SYD-HKG. Only time will tell.

Remember when Qantas returned to the Perth-Singapore route? The forst we knew about it was it popping up in various systems. Wasn't completely accurate, but it was still there.....

These things all have to get into systems at some point, and probably tweaked and adjusted, and probablsy shouldn't be on display.....
