I've used some pretty bad public toilets in my travels but I think the one I used today takes the cake. I was on a regional train in Germany. Upon walking into the toilet I found it had "water" all over the floor. But I was desperate and there was only one toilet on the train, so I used it anyway. When I flushed the toilet, the water didn't come out inside the toilet, it came out the sides of the toilet and went all over the floor! I came out with wet feet and got lots of strange looks...

So, where was the worst public toilet you have used? I'm sure someone has experienced worse!

Some of the drop roadside toilets in Europe are pretty disgusting. I remember though a particularly unpleasant toilet on a train to Hanoi, the Reunification Express. It was the First Class toilet -- so I can only imagine how appalling the 3rd class toilet must have been!

Just been to penang,at a temple on the way to scenic railit was a squat & fire , and then blow me down no paper ,but their was a hose ,so cooling!!

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

I would say on a train from Vijayawada to Delhi, it was one of the squat toilets which just goes straight onto the track but was blocked and the only thing around was a hose so that wasn't much help and to top it off it was a ~36 hour train ride.

Another one that was bad but not really a public toilet was on my way from Delhi to Agra I had Delhi Belly and had to stop at a random restaurant and the toilet had an big open window above it which went directly into the kitchen, The actual toilet was fine but I would never eat there.

In Kuwait, public squat toilet. Brown floor, brown half way up the walls. I just couldn't do it.

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

I've been to a number of dirty toilets. Thankfully I've blocked out the details!

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

Five years ago went to a public toilet in Berlin someone had painted pentagrams, swastikas and other symbols on the walls in what looks like blood and faeces. There are some nutters about.

I once went to a public toilet in rural China, it was a shed with a drain running down the middle. Initially a huge shock, but once I got use to it, it wasn't too bad.

On Tokelau island there is a toilet that is a seat suspended over the ocean. Was very scenic, but a bit strange sitting there with the sea breeze blowing across your bottom.

I've found a combination of 'yellow water" & excrement all over the floors of most of the trains & public toilets on my travels through India.

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

A couple of bad ones:

Singapore Taxi/Bus depot in little india, and they wanted me to pay. Also in Singapore upstairs in some run down shopping centre like place. Both squat places, the smell hit you like a wall.
On St Margit Island in Budapest - but a lady and her family seemed to live there, so I assumed it was clean despite the smell.

Saltergate, former home of Chesterfield Football Club, used to have a urinal against a brick wall. Always found it sh¡tty.

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

The toilets at ZQN troubled me for a number of days.

Should have had a floor mat for people leaving the bathroom

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

Glenferrie train station. Gross, smelly, water on the floor from leaky toilet and toilet paper dragged all over the floor.

About 12 years ago I remember trying to get my then 10 year old daughter to use the toilet on the Reunification Express but she was 'outa there' before she even got in! She held on for the whole overnight trip from Hue to Hanoi

We were in economy sleepers with no air conditioning. What were we thinking?

Despite the toilets, Vietnam was one of our all time favourite family holidays.

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

Northern Ethiopia, it was squat toilet the walls and door had poo marks made by people's hands. If you wanted toilet paper you had to buy it but the toilet paper was cut up pieces of scrap paper.

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

I have been to some where stuff is smeared everywhere and the toilets are just filthy.

I pray that I never have an emergency and need to use any of these toilets.

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

Kandy train station, Sri Lanka. I can still smell it 20 years later...

Re: Worst public toilet you've used?

Any Automated Public Toilet Solutions | Homepage | Exeloo toilet installation anywhere (but i can specifically say Victoria Square, Adelaide and Northbridge and Murray Street Mall, Perth.)

Despite their claim of 'self cleaning' there always seems to be a saturated floor and poo smeared all over the place.

Also there are a number of long drop waterless toilets on rural highways in WA. I've learnt to just keep some toilet paper in the 4WD and find a laver species of tree to squat behind.
