Can someone remind me how difficult it is to use residual balances on the good food gift cards? Restaurants generally ok to split a bill to get rid of a small balance? Going to a few different restaurants this coming weekend so considering them.

Nightmare in my experience. This is the primary reason why I stopped using them. You'll have to get past staff who don't want to split bills and potentially deal with surcharge calculations.

I just blew a few TCN Restaurant cards on EFTPOS network last week (having to eat before Sydney Comedy Festival!). It's not hard. As I have said in a previous post, don't ask the staff to process your last $68.74 balance, because it feels too hard to calculate.

If you have $100 gift card X 2, and your bill is $130, don't pay $130 on the 2 cards, then leaving $70 balance, it is going to be hard to use. Only pay $100 on gift card, then $30 on your credit card, so you have another $100 gift card to use next time. You make it feel easier to calculate.

If you have a $100 card, and your bill is $60, tell the staff that there is only $50 in your gift card, so they will only process $50, leaving $50 balance, easier for next time.

I also have a Google Sheet in my phone, which has formulas written already, so if I enter $100 into it, then I enter the percentage of surcharge when the EFTPOS terminal is in front of me, it would tell me the amount before card surcharge. Staffs are happy with that even if that means I end up paying $99.17. Yes, it makes life more complicated in real life, but it doesn't feel that way for them.

It's all psychology.

So I haven't had any problem since doing this, and I saved a lot of money from the TCN Restaurants promo last week.

Depends on the business, and how busy they are!

Last night managed to use 5 x $100 cards and split payments over them which was a good haul :)

Interested in member's experiences with the white "Good Food" gift cards? Are they only redeemable at those restaurants listed on their website or at restaurants more generally.

I've had them rejected at half a dozen local restaurants. The black "Restaurant Gift Cards" work fine; it's only the white "Good Food" cards I'm having trouble redeeming.

They are completely different things. Read the detail info or T&C.

Good Food is only specific restaurants with an agreement with them.

TCN (The Card Network) Restaurant cards operate on the EFTPOS network (savings button) and it will approve as long as the EFTPOS terminal (merchant account) is coded as restaurant and is able to process via EFTPOS (no Square terminal).

Good Food is only specific restaurants with an agreement with them.
This was true of the old Blackhawk Network Good Food gift card (discontinued in 2021) but the TCN Good Food gift card is a merchant category gift card like the TCN Restaurant.

However, it's not as widely accepted as the TCN Restaurant because it lacks support for certain merchant category codes like '5462: Bakeries' or '5814: Fast Food Restaurants'. That last one is crucial because 5814 isn't just used by typical fast food restaurants, it actually covers cafes and a lot of other restaurants you might not expect.

it's only the white "Good Food" cards I'm having trouble redeeming.
Are you using the physical card or converting them into digital gift cards? They're more likely to be accepted in digital form but they still won't work at as many places as the TCN Restaurant gift cards for the reasons mentioned above.

I'm surprised, because that's not what's stated on the web site:

Where Can I use the Good Food Gift Card?
You can use the Good Food Gift Cards at restaurants and venues displayed on this website. To see the full list click here.

What if my TCN Gift Cards is not accepted for payment?
Sorry to hear that. Check out the following reasons your card may not be working:
The Venue you have tried to use your gift card at is outside of our approved venue list

That's what they want you to think but it's not true. In their own terms and conditions they even state that:
This Card is a restricted access network gift card that can be used for electronic transactions, to purchase goods and services at selected merchants that have the designated merchant category code ‘Eating Places’ or ‘Drinking Places’.
I've used them at all sorts of places that aren't listed on their website (e.g. Uber Eats, GyG, El Jannah etc). They – or at least the digital version – should even work at hotels.
