Another absurd situation in the UAE where a person reporting a rape gets jail time.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: A Norwegian woman sentenced to 16 months in jail in Dubai for having sex outside marriage after she reported an alleged rape said on Friday she decided to speak out in hopes of drawing attention to the risks of outsiders misunderstanding the Islamic-influenced legal codes in this cosmopolitan city.

Norwegian woman in Dubai sentenced to jail after reporting rape to police

And everyone thought it was a wonderful place.

As I was explaining to someone today, the only way I can see this absurdity (while I accept local laws can be different and all that) changing is if someone famous - and able to grab every headline all around the world - was raped. Sadly, I can't see a relative nobody (and I mean no offence) making any impact on the law/how they treat women.

The court house might look modern and is, but the laws are ancient, backward and tribal.

Disgraceful case.

Whilst is should never have happened the woman involved can now leave Dubai.

A Norwegian woman at the centre of a Dubai rape case dispute has been pardoned and is free to leave Dubai, she has said.

Interior designer Marte Deborah Dalelv was on a business trip in Dubai when she says she was raped in March.
She reported the attack to the police, but was charged with perjury, having extramarital sex and drinking alcohol, receiving a 16-month prison sentence.

QF travelers to Europe should avoid UAE in protest, oh that's right we can't as there's no longer a choice.

Also very surprised that the hotel didn't do more to stop the women going to the police given the well publicised case of an Australian hotel employee who is now suing that hotel chain.

Agree the laws are backward but at least the powers that be in the UAE appear to be listening to political pressure in this case.

I'm not interested in Dubai and do use alternative routes, oh dear QF misses out on my spend to the UK. :D Shame as i am generally a loyal QF supporter.

There is, sort of. QF to SIN or HKG then Finnair (AY) to Helsinki (QF codeshare). My TA (does at lot if corporate bookings) tells this route has tripled in their bookings since the other routing via Dubai was introduced. I'm doing it next month - great pricing as well.

Makes me wonder if QF has agreed with EK to route any new European destinations only via DXB. To think QF has another 4 odd years going via DXB...

What about Malala?

yesterday you said you wished you sent your mum through the middle east instead of the ticketed route on USDM... make your mind up
I have made up my mind.

Mum does not mind transiting through the Middle East as most of her friends transit through there on the way to Greece.

I do not want to go anywhere near the place. And this is just another reason on top of the many reasons already I want to avoid the place.
