Hi there,

[I was not sure whether this was for the fare help forum or here - I'm not trying to be a cheapskate and avoid the $29 gratuity by posting here - I made the (perhaps erroneous) call that I was just after some general info rather than specific help with specific dates) that this was more appropriate in this forum]

A number of years ago there used to be a half decent QF/BA fare SYD-LHR with a stopover in either LAX or JFK (and return the same way or via Asia). With the QF/BA joint services agreement over - other than the Finnair fare (which is great if you can find availability in the low fare buckets - but becomes mightily expensive once you start going up the fare buckets) is there another half decent OW Y fare to the UK that allows at least one way via the USA?

Many thanks,
TripleB

Swiss will book you on CX to HKG and QF from NYC back to Australia as well. It's a good fare.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

In years gone by the return economy excursion fare Aust to the UK/Europe & return had an EH fare level (eg via SIN) and ap AP level (eg via LAX) which was slightly more however still cheaper than a published round world fare.

We booked a JQ sale fare in whY BNE/HNL (now upgraded to J for AUD400.00) then bought an AA KUPP HNL/xDFW/xMIA/SKB followed by a QF partner award on AA in whY SKB/xMIA/BCN then a QF Classic BCN/xDXB/xSYD/BNE so you can really create whatever routing you want if you think outside the circle.

There's some food for thought there ... thanks. That excursion fare to which you refer ozbeachbabe is the one I was thinking of - it was sensational.

I need to travel to the UK for a family event and what I was going to do was try and rack up some serious SCs with a USA AA instant upgrade F run whilst on a LAX stopover. It might be easier (and cheaper) to just do the QF $1850 return fare to Europe with a routing like SYD-MEL-DXB-UK-DXB-SIN-BNE-SYD for 210 SC and then put the extra money I would save on the US fare towards cheap JQ day trips to AKL at 50SC return....

How many SC do you need for your requalification & by what date?

You could always buy a sale fare on JQ SYD/HNL/SYD with a plus bundle of $59.00 for 40 SC. We got an email offer to upgrade to Star Class for AUD300.00 or AUD400.00 for 120 SC & points which also included lounge access not that we needed it as both WP.

You could do a return KUPP ex HNL to your Caribbean destination of choice & maybe even use some QF points for a partner award on AA to get from the Caribbean to MIA or JFK then purchase a cheap return trans-Atlantic fare to the Yoo Kay so you would return to same way as you went over but you could always come back via a different KUPP destination eg going over could be HNL/xDFW/xMIA/AUA (330 SC for approx USD890.00) then return SKB/xMIA/xDFW/OGG for something different (330 SC & similar price).

Then use QF points to get AUA/xMIA/JFK (or East Coast city of choice) & JFK/xMIA/SKB. It would depend which US city has the cheapest fare to/from LHR or Europe for the purchased commercial fare component of the trip. Heaps better bang for your buck than paying AUD1,850.00 for only 210 SC IMHO however that's entirely up to you.

700 by end of November ... so heaps of time.

I'm just doing forward some planning/thinking. In all probability I will most have to do a relatively tight turnaround (leave AU on the QF9 late on Thursday to be there for a function on Saturday and then leave Sunday to be back in SYD first thing Tuesday morning for 2 days off work). I was really just seeing if there was an excursion fare so I could do a day of flying in the US on the way over - which looks like it might be just a bridge too far.

[edit to change the number of SC needed]

I've seen EU -> US fares for as low as $260 USD with AA,BA TATL on 77W/380/747 to JFK..

Rarer to find stuff in reverse direction, but occasionally $600. That's a good price.
