Well the rumours are becoming stronger with a possible announcement 1/2/10.
JAL dumps alliance with American Airlines in favor of Delta, SkyTeam - The Mainichi Daily News
Japan Airlines (JAL) decided Wednesday to dump its partnership with American Airlines and its Oneworld alliance in favor of Delta and the SkyTeam group of carriers.
American together with a private equity firm had offered to invest $1.4 billion in JAL and strengthen cooperation between the two airlines, but JAL judged an alliance with Delta -- the world's largest airline -- would produce greater benefits.
The partnership with Delta will be officially announced by new JAL Chairman Kazuo Inamori on Monday.

I’d think that a partnership with “the worlds largest airline” only strengthens “the worlds largest airline”. I can’t see this being great for JAL in the long term, but time will tell.

So JAL wants to partner with Delta so Delta will switch some slots to the new airport which is closer to the city. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t want to do this without an alliance?

And just switching to Delta wont reduce the number of slots AA has into NRT, or will it?

It still isnt over. The announcement has merely stated that for the moment JAL will stick with OW whilst the management start from scratch their assessment of OW versus Skyteam. The interesting part was with the slip when he said the agreement with DL has been set aside-so it certainly was very close.
Just to add to all us OW supporters worry is a report that TAM wants to invest in LAN.TAM is the next to join Star.

Close call indeed.

Seems that OW are well behind in the partner count and they certainly don't want to be losing any!

Well the former fat lady has sung-official from JAL-
Feb 09, 2010 Japan Airlines and American Airlines Strengthen Partnership and Apply for Approval of Antitrust Immunity
Tokyo, February 9, 2010: Today, Japan Airlines (JAL) announced the decision to strengthen its partnership with American Airlines (AA). The carriers, both members of the oneworld alliance, will jointly apply to the U.S Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Ministry of Land Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan (MLIT) for the approval of antitrust immunity (ATI) on transpacific routes.

Upon receiving the approval from the relevant authorities, JAL and AA intend to enter a joint business venture which will enhance their scope of cooperation on the routes between the United States and Japan, through adjustments to their respective networks, flight schedules, and other business activities, allowing both carriers to better complement each other to develop and offer competitive products and quality service to their customers.

The JAL Group Chief Operating Officer and president, Mr. Masaru Onishi said on this occasion: “We have analyzed this issue in great detail, and we are excited at the prospects in terms of the convenience and benefits for our customers. We also firmly believe that the advantages of this development with American Airlines can strongly support JAL at a time when we are striving towards the revival of our business, which we are determined to achieve. We certainly look forward to a deeper, more mutually-beneficial relationship with our long-time partner.”

As JAL undergoes the process of reorganization, it will seize the opportunity presented by this partnership to strengthen its network and further improve its offerings. From hence forth, in addition to the joint business agreement with AA, JAL will also fortify its relationships with other partners in the oneworld alliance, so as to provide customers a comprehensive range of products and services, and become once again, the airline of customer’s choice.

You probably heard my sighs even though transported to Tassie at the moment.Over the next few years one of our plans was a Circle Asia trip with our AA points being used for F awards from NRT to the USA.The milesaver awards are good value at 125000 miles for F return and when I check can often get 2 awards 2 weeks out.
Now I would try for CX from HKG first but 2 awards there much harder. And sometimes using NRT you are offered a JAL flight on one sector which I would jump at.

And I can now book our PE flights to Europe later this year! :D
