Why doesn't the Qantas website work in Safari?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I have had endless trouble with the Qantas website also.

- Both Safari & Chrome more often then not won't load the Multi Booking page, the majority of the page loads but where you input your flight info doesn't load, I get the three loading dots endlessly bouncing away.

- The main page struggles in a similar way when I try select flight routing, as you all know when you select a departure point the menu opens up a little with more selections, but this often fails for me with both Safari & Chrome browsers.

I have tried all the usual fixes, clearing caches and cookies etc but still the pages won't load properly.

I push on and do endless refreshes until it loads properly, currently it takes 3-5 refreshes before the pages work but the process starts again if I want to look at different routing, dates etc....

Any I.T. gurus out there that can help?

I am just about to book a flight with Singapore Airlines rather then Qantas because there website actually works.

I am running Safari (version 15.5) and Chrome (Version 103.0.5060.114) on a MacBook Air running Big Sur 11.6.7

I also have issues using Safari 15.5 with Qantas pages only - always blacks out the find flights bar at top after having it open for a few days (leave my tabs up endlessly). I close down Safari, re-open and problem solved.

Never have any issues running the page on Chrome (with hundreds of tabs open endlessly).

My Mac is new and on Monterey (as attached) so that's not the issue.

I have difficulties with QF website on iPad Safari. Also trying to get/do multi-city or sometimes even straight forward searches. The QF apps works fine but obviously doesn’t have all the functionality.

Chrome and Firefox on iPad usually work ok.

QF Web Site problems are not unique to Safari. I went to check-in for tomorrow's flight using Windows/Firefox just now. Gave an error saying there is a problem and to try again later. Tried three times with the same result. Went to the IOS app on my phone and check-in was successful. Looks like the work experience kid is still engaged with the Qantas IT department.

It’s amazing that a billion dollar company has these issues, especially when it involves selling their main product.

I’ve often booked flights with other airlines because of the website issues.

It makes me think, surely some of the senior Qantas executives would get frustrated with their own website. Maybe I’m naive to think they would use the website to book flights, but even if I was one of there family or friends I would certainly alert them of the issues.

Not just functional issues with the UX is appalling - wasted space, not unintuitive etc

This is what happens when they outsource Web site maintenance to the cheapest bidder.

Lets not forget the glaring security issue a few months back where you could see other information about other members FF accounts!

You might have missed my post on the previous page, I use the exact same OS/browser combination and don't see the same issue. I'm not entirely convinced the problem lies on Qantas' end yet (and I'm usually pretty quick to point the finger!)

Yep, there’s a whole lot of other cough going on with peoples individual settings for cookies, tracking, pop up’s etc etc

I used get issues that I‘m sure was related to 2FA (it would seem to semi forget that I had been 2FA’d and go no where logging back in). My issues are probably some Safari setting but unfortunately, there’s no “Reset to factory” switch on Safari….

Completely agree Sudoer, it could definitely be something on my end that I haven’t figured out yet.

However it still surprises me that for all my online activity, Qantas is the only website I have these issues with.

I spend a lot of time researching flights for myself, friends and family on Singapore Airlines, AA and Qatar also. I use all their tools like multi booking etc and never get the same issues I do on Qantas.

It’s very weird, and I could be at fault, but for someone like myself who I believe has an above average knowledge of computers etc to run into basic website glitches. Surely that’s got to be warning sign for the Qantas team.

Update for anyone who runs into the same issues I had.

Even after deleting all caches and history again Safari still played up.

But…

Using Safari in Private Browsing mode has helped dramatically. The website rarely times out and I am able to search for award seats much more easily.

Advice to anyone using Safari is to browse Qantas using Private Browsing in Safari.

I find safari to be very fickle with the QF site and not worth the trouble. I don’t bother with it anymore. Firefox works for me. Even Google.

So glad to see a thread on this! I thought I was going crazy with the same sort of problems on my phone using Chrome despite clearing cache. I could never seem to predict when it wasn't going to work. Using Chrome on a laptop was fine.

Have tried incognito browsing now and seems to be doing the trick 👍

I raised problems with the call centre about QF website using Safari on an ipad and was advised the solution was...

  • use a windows computer
  • clear your cache, history and cookies
  • use chrome only
  • say three hail marys while facing South Africa
  • Throw a pinch of salt over your shoulder

cheers skip

PS the majority of the above was actual CC advice

They didn’t suggest using the app?

Actually for me, the QF website on iPad Safari has been working reasonably well for several months now.

It's probably related to Safari's strict default around cross site tracking cookies - a privacy measure which is generally a good thing (for the user, not the advertiser) but can cause issues with logging in and navigating across websites.

You can try turning it off to see if that resolves the problem.

Control privacy and security settings for Safari

Go to Settings

> Safari, then below Privacy & Security, turn any of the following on or off:
  • Prevent Cross-Site Tracking: Safari limits third-party cookies and data by default. Turn this option off to allow cross-site tracking.

Fiji?

Can't remember. It was a while ago.

I only use the app for boarding passes when I forget paper and checking my account.
Slightly OT, but I’ve been able to do sneaky things on the app that the website didn’t allow (but otherwise legit). Namely booking mixed class whY and PE SYD-SIN (whY up - day flight and PE back o/n but also less points to upgrade to J). Alas, I’ve never been able to replicate that hack since…

But the iPad app works reasonably well anyway.
