Why do links get reformatted?

I posted my link in the Superloop referral thread and when inserting the link, I pasted the URL into the URL box and the text box. The forum software decided to override what was in the text box. I edited it, same thing again. Why?

I added the URL as plain text inside QUOTE tags and, once again, the forum software decided that it knows better and reformatted my post. Why?

This is dumb behaviour when I want to post a specific URL and make it clear that it is not a generic link, which is what my post now looks like:
