Syd to LA return - but can only afford PE one way. Which way would you choose?
130pm flight out 1030pm flight back.
Thoughts?

Depends, depends. Myself, I'd probably choose the return leg, although conventional wisdom might say vice versa. When flying Y to LAX, I tend to find that my excitement means I can cope with the lack of sleep and comfort on the way over and I'm more able to cope with the time difference at the other end with a minimum of fuss. I just want to get out for a walk and then maybe a short nap, and then I'm fine with jet lag. I find the few extra comforts in PE on the way back to be more useful.

When you say 'can only afford' do you mean this is an award ticket?

If it is a paid ticket - have a look at Fiji Airways... return business class SYD-LAX should be just under $3000. If this is an option for you, I can provide details on how to book it for that price.

If it's an award ticket, then use PE for the return 1030 pm flight.

I agree with other posters, PE on the return trip. You'll be tired after your last day in the US especially with the late night flight.

The LAX-SYD leg is an hour longer so more reason to do the PE on the return leg.

I suppose it depends on which end you need to arrive more refreshed...
If no difference I'd do the flight back for a better overnight sleep.

I would do PE SYD-LAX. I find that if I do the upgraded leg on the way back, the excitement of being in a premium cabin can overshadow your time there. Where as flying in a premium cabin on the way there gives a really nice way to start the holiday.

Furthermore flying back LAX-SYD, since it is at natural sleep time (unlike on the way there), getting to sleep, even in Y is not much of an issue.

I guess that's exactly where YMMV. Even though it's a natural sleep time, I simply cannot sleep in Y. And when you want to but can't because it's cramped and you can't find a comfortable position, it's torture. Hence my preference for Y+ on the return. Little more space, seat reclines more, quieter cabin. All up, much more conducive to sleep for me.

Thanks everyone - love reading all of your thoughts.
My only frustration now is trying to book different classes (which you have to do via phone) using points plus pay (which you can only do online) - so basically impossible to do - sooooooooooo frustrating!!!!!!!!
If anyone can help me with that I'd be really impressed

Unless you've got a good deal / the client / work is paying I'd save the extra $ or points and just accept whY both directions. Admittedly I've only got VA to compare from, but for me PE SYD-LAX-SYD just wasn't worth the extra. Whilst the food was presented nicer and there was a little extra legroom, I still couldn't sleep and that's the main issue I'd consider. Save the $ this trip and go for J next time.

When are you travelling? I'll have QF PE to compare against in a weeks time... The general sentiment seems to be that the QF product is better: here's hoping so.

For LAX - Fiji Airways business class return for $3000 must be an option as opposed to PE on just about any airline :) Not applicable for points bookings, but for paid fares, they would be my first choice.
