Flying in on QF82 into SYD. Anyone know which side of the plane to choose for window views of CBD?

If airplane makes approach from north you should sit on the left (port) side.

Tks - not that it matters anymore as I have left it too long on the choose your seat page and it has timed out. The new QANTAS check-in pages now means I am noted as checked-in, don't have my boarding pass and can no longer choose my seat. Sometimes you wonder why they bother changing their websites when all it does is make things less useful.

It seems almost every flight I have taken into Sydney from overseas lans heading north, so right side always best for views. As for the interrupted checkin process, just call them :)

If your landing to the north you won't see much of the CBD on the right side as you join downwind. Sitting on the left will get you a nice view as you overfly the city for downwind or should the wind mean an approach to 16.

Now that I think about it, I suspect my landings must usually be to the south. I always sit on the right on flights from SCL, and I suspect that we fly just to the south of the airport, then head north (travelling then west of the airport), then turn right right to do the landing, which would then be actually southbound. Am unsure, but I always get a beautiful view of the CBD and bridge, etc.

My point still stands, especially as the OP will be approaching Sydney from the North West and not the North East which is the case for the Oceanic arrivals.

Still with the left hand side - ideal if arriving from the north, if you are approaching from the south (which seems to be used more often for that flight), you are unlikely to see anything on either side, but you never know, you might overfly the airport so the left would still be best.

I always pick the left hand side of the plane. If you land from the north you will get a good view of the city (weather permitting) and if you land from the south you will get a good view of 'The Shire'.... Gods country. LOL.

Not that I know but I always thought it had to do with the direction of the wind. If it is a southerly (or close enough) they land from the north and if the wind is from the south (or close enough) they land from the south.

What do I know!!

Well QF82 just landed and left side it is.

And if it's anything like the approach to 16 L I just did you will break out of cloud over lane cove circa 2000ft just in time to get a view of Sydney.

You can't just run the check in process again?

If landing from the north, left hand side (A seats) for one of the world's most scenic approaches. If landing from the south, you may have a good view from the A seats from higher up as the flight circles to line up with the approach from the south - depends on the path taken. It was a fabulous view from QF549 in 25A last night.
