Planning to trip later this year flying Sydney to Paris and then Istanbul back to Sydney (after spending a month travelling cross country in Europe and possibly flying from Italy to Istanbul). already a Qantas FF however would like to travel Emirates. Checked both QF and EK and price almost exactly the same for the same itinerary. thinking that if we book with QF, would get mostly EK operated flights (except the Sydney - Paris sector) and would be earning QF points which are used mainly to visit family in WGN, NZ. Can anyone tell me whether joining the EK program and getting their points would offer any better value.

EK points have a short life span. QF is IMHO a better option if most of your flying is in and around Australia and NZ. But maybe I'm biased.

I would also suggest that you check a range of airlines as there are some great specials on offer and you may save more than what any points are worth.

Though you may still be able get some points to somewhere useful.
