Where to stay in Chiang Mai ?

Actually I should be asking where not to stay in Chiang Mai. I understand there are now Bogan areas where senior citizens should not frequent.

We have been to Thailand many times but have not visited the northern areas so would appreciate any advice on things to see and do.

Are the Foodie tours worth looking at or is it just as easy to walk around ourselves ? We really like Thai food

I would highly recommend Holiday Inn as they treat me well each time and usually upgraded to suite. I also like Ibis Styles but is a little out of the way as is the Grandview hotel.

There are many 4-5 star hotels that are quite good but have never tried as they are quite expensive in my opinion.

Hotels such as Imperial Mae Ping, Centara and Duangtawan are near the night bazaar, reasonably priced but can be full of tour groups. Generally most hotels in the old town are boutique type of hotels, guest houses and backpacker hotels. Stay away from these and you'll avoid the Bogan types.

The trendy area is around Naeminhaminda. You'll find many restaurants and bars.

Chiang Mai is quite easy to get around with songthaews but as any other place in Thailand they'll try to rip you off. Bargaining helps keep costs down. Note many hotels provide free shuttle service to/from night market/bazaar.

We stayed in the Nimman area whixh has great coffee and restaurants and felt very safe. We stayed at Bed Nimman which was amazing and very reasonably price. Highly recommended.

We stayed at LeMeridien Chiang Mai. It was very good, central position, at the night markets, and the in house italian restaurant Favola was fantastic. We dined there twice during our stay. The Italian chef is a hoot !

Anyone know how busy Chiang Mai will be over Christmas? My flights are all confirmed but no hotels yet.

I've stayed at the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel a number of times over the years since first visiting there in 1990.

Doi Suthep is the top attraction.

An elephant camp is usually also on the list of things to do.

Chang Rai is also not a bad day trip.

Have stayed at Rati Lanna 4 times now and love it. Little bit further from city centre but they offer free Tuk Tuks to the night market at certain times otherwise the fares to the centre of town are dirt cheap.

We stayed below in January....nice quiet hotel just 10 minutes walk from the Old City but in a quiet neighbourhood. They have family rooms which was a bonus for us
