I’ve never understood why French churches are always so dark, and some look like they could be places for those who bat for the other side
I think with any of the old buildings, engineering windows was a difficult thing. I'm not a Church-ie sort of person, but do wonder at the skill and craftsmanship in how they are built. When I visited Chichester Cathedral some years ago, I laid down on the floor so I could look up and admire the structure. The Deacon came over and laid down alongside me as he understood what I was doing, and we had a good chat about the detail and intricacies in the building, while the tour groups walked around us.

Notre Dame in Montreal was a welcoming sort of place, it had that vibe. Others I agree, not so much. They seemed to be aimed at those who managed the religion, more than the faith or belief.

In that case I’ll say Switzerland. Don’t know the river, but Rhine, Aare, Rhone?
Very good. It's the Rheinfall, the largest waterfall in Europe and located on the outskirts of Schaffhausen. You can do a triangular trip there thanks to very efficient Swiss Rail. Take train from Schaffhausen station to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall (you can see the electric line in the background of first photo), about 6 minutes, disembark at the Schloss (castle) out of picture to the right and walk to the edge of the falls (platform at right). Then go down to river level and board the shuttle boat for a trip to the rock in the middle of the falls where you will spend two hours in a queue getting soaked and then get your selfie on top of the rock before rejoining the shuttle boat and continuing to the Neuhausen on the other side. Then a walk up the hill to the Neuhausen station middle background of photo below and take the train back to Schaffhausen (6 minutes) and board your IC to Zurich. We had left our suitcases in lockers in Schaffhausen station.

We took the shuttle but did not get off at the rock! using it to cross the Rhine. The shuttle boat in my previous photo and the people on the rock give you a sense of scale in this photo taken from the viewing platform at the Schloss.

I wanted to visit the Rheinfall (having seen Niagara, Victoria, Iguassu falls) and we did it as a detour on a train trip Munich -> Schaffhausen -> (booked a single long connection time train ticket- I think 4 hours) -> Zurich. As it was we ended getting on an IC an hour earlier than our booking. The original photo posted was taken from the train as it curved around the river at Neuhausen on its way to Zurich. I should've done a trip report, I suppose.
