Where in the World should I propose?!

I think proposing on an A380 is perfect for an avgeek - but is your partner an avgeek? If not, I would suggest it would not be her "fairytale".

Personally, I would go for somewhere that will have a sentimental value for both of you (or maybe more-so for her!).

Omg - in a plane??? Seriously??? A plane?? Better hope she says yes or that's a looooong flight.

Ok - from this chick's point of view a plane is about as romantic as the kitchen. Even in F. "An aeroplane is SOOO romantic" said no woman EVER.

Equally - forget about Horse-drawn carriage in NYC. Stinky and cold. Now the Russian Tea Room on the other hand...better.

Eiffel Tower in Paris - nice but clichéd.

How about a hot air balloon ride for 2 over the Masai Mara? Private helicopter ride over New York? Private helicopter ride over Niagara Falls? On the balcony at Le Sirenuse Hotel in Positano? On the stage of the Hollywood Bowl? On the stage of the New York Met? While watching the Northern lights? Sounds of Silence dinner at Uluru? Mackinnon pass on the spectacular Milford Track? On the Las Vegas Grand Canyon skywalk? What about the Salar de Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia? They're known for the amazing photos that throw out perspective - if your GF has a great sense of humour you could get an AMAZING photo of you appearing to be "under her thumb" to commemorate your engagement. That would be a real talking piece on your living room wall for sure!

If you want to narrow it down, start with a place that is on both of your bucket lists, or that has special significance. Then consider the privacy/lack of privacy issue carefully IMHO. An intensely personal moment shared with strangers could be hideously uncomfortable for the wrong woman.

And at the end of the day if you're the right man it won't matter if the proposal is written on a kids toy coming out of her box of cornflakes.

Good luck! (and please please please don't do the on-the-aircraft thing.....)

Perfect reply - written by a woman - the subject of which this thread relates - of course.

I think this reply is good enough for this tread to be closed now!

St Geran Hotel looks very nice, probably for our honeymoon. If all goes to plan, I will propose in [not sure yet where] in Feb/March. We'll be having a small ceremony in Santorini in end of June/early July, the wedding after party in Mykonos ... and then we'll top it off with a honeymoon in Maritius for September/October 2014. Yes I am being greedy but the idea is to do it once in my lifetime only :)

Currently in Santorini, and was in Mykonos last week :)....so I can understand your thought processes!...June/ July is a busy time of the year though in both places, and not a cheap place for your family and friends to get to.

Recently when we were at Sirocco in Bangkok (rooftop restaurant, 61st(?) floor), a proposal occured at the table next to us. Certainly a spectacular setting, but we wouldn't recommend the restaurant, regrettably!

Don't do too much flying. First class return to HongKong. Book a suite at the Peninsula or other luxury hotel. Charter a luxury junk with dinner and fine wines - if moment doesn't 'happen', then next day over a romantic breakfast or :

<<Set in the heart of the Tsim Sha Tsui tourist district, the real attraction of Hong Kong's drive-in movie theater is the setting, with the harbor at its back and skyscrapers fencing it in. Another highlight is the handful of classic American cars the owners have imported , ideal for those who don't have their own car, these 1950's automobiles can be booked in advance. Perfect for 'making-out' on the backseat. How: The theatre is in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, about a ten-minute walk from Kowloon MTRstation on Austin West Road.>>

or dinner on 'the Peak'. All the best to you! :)

I am wow-ed by some of the romantic and over-the-top proposals! I am really impressed. And theozflyer - that is an awesome proposal, and great first post in AFF. Some awesome suggestions by all - Paris, Venice, NYC, Maldives, Italy et al, some really exotic locations too by travelbird, great ideas that have my mind in overdrive ..... and any of those places mentioned I would have no hesitation in proposing at. As much as I hope that I can organise that "perfect" location - which I still haven't decided yet -I just hope that when the time comes, that 'everything falls into place'. Some of the good proposal stories also just happen out of the blue because the timing was just perfect and everything just came together. I hope that as much planning I can do, the timing and everything coming together, comes together.

My suggestions are based on the winter timeline proposed above!

(Lake Louise in Winter)
If it hasn't been suggested already I do love Lake Louise in Alberta Canada more in the winter than the summer! Its a fairy tale place where they will actually take you out in a horse and cart to opposite end of the lake as the sun is starting to set allowing you to get the beautiful sunset, then as you turn around at the other end you pop the question just as the light of the hotel start to flicker on (its really a lot more romantic than it sounds). Then you can have a couple of drinks at the ice bar on the lake (its quite awesome) and dinner inside the beautiful hotel.

Or equally impressive is the Fairmont Banff hot springs over breakfast looking out on the snow covered valley! Or looking back at the snow cover castle of the Fairmont!

CX Also has had some awesome AUS/NZ-HKG-YVR/YYC fares recently that also allowed you to depart from another North American port for no extra charge e.g. NYC, ORD, LAX, SFO, YYZ

That is just the height of awesome. I think the day I get a partner in crime that I want to marry, I will show them this photo in order to show how high the bar is set. The way I am going at getting a partner (and how long it seems to be changing Australian law) it will end up having to be a Virgin Galactic boarding pass.

I had this big thing planned in Capri. Had a friend over there handle all the arrangements. Then I got sick and I mean really sick. So we cancelled the trip and after been nursed in bed for almost a month I knew I had to ask her. So one evening I rolled over in bed with the ring and asked her. I'm surprised she said yes the way I looked tbh lol

........ I'm totally getting you guys to plan mr k_sheeps proposal (or more likely, our eloping!). He's terrible at planning holiday stuff.

How about the Colosseum in Rome?
Throughout history, countless men's lives have ended there!!!
:D

Not sure I will ever get the opportunity to propose. I don't hanlde rejection that well.

Just remember where ever you propose is going to be your 'special' place. Then you'll have to visit it every so often including special anniversaries. Do you want to incur that expense that often?
If I did propose though it will be on a golf course with her driving the golf cart. There will be regular visits and we can make everyday a special anniversary. ;)
