If you are booking on Emirates, they don't have fuel surcharges ... so it will make no difference. Whilst some airlines are quite happy to charge $500+ in surcharges and taxes for return flights AUS-Europe, Emirates charge only the airport charges and govt taxes, or more around the $100AUD mark.
Actually that's not entirely correct, EK do charge Surcharges, but they're one of only a couple of airlines who include the surcharges in the fare not the taxes, so you're still paying them, but they are where they belong, in the fare (mainly so that agents will rightly be paid commission on the surcharge not just the fare)
Fuel surcharges have a become a nice little income earner, as they are also levied on "free" award tickets, for most airlines.
Just checked the quoted price for the trip, it broke down as $2199 fare, $200 surcharge and $75 booking fee for the agent. It's just that surcharges are all over the place and are making comparisons difficult, not to mention annoying when the "FLY TO LONDON FOR $1599 RETURN!!" email turns out to be nothing like it.

Travel Daily did a table on Monday to highlight the rise, rise, rise of fuel surcharges and the whimper of a fall we've seen so far. It's not exactly comparing apples with apples but you will get the gist.
Hopefully it attaches (as I haven't attached here before)
