So for international travel it shows points and pay.
When is it best to pay the max amount to save points?
What are peoples opinion for value on saving points for another time and paying the taxes and fuel\airport charges?
Using credit card cost $30 a person is that the same for Visa and Amex to pay for transactions over $50 on the VFF site?

I won't trade my VFF points for less than 2.5c each ... and generally am unhappy to trade them for less than 3c each. So, my answer to your question would be ... whenever the points cost versus the outright cash cost gives me less than 2.5c a point.

I think the CC cost is the same for all cards and is, frankly, a mockery of our collective intelligence. Have a look around to see if you can find an aggregator who won't charge for using a card but still offers the same ticket face value pricing. Its getting harder as a lot of my go-to websites now pass on the cost that virgin likes to charge for this. Ultimately its a form of drip pricing in my view - to me, the cost is the cost is the cost, so, if another airline will fly me cheaper, all-in, then they'll get the business.

How does the calculation\equation work?
Points*0.25= Cash amount in cents?

Easier to say points X 0.025 = Cash amount in $'s

or

$ for fines / points for fines x 100 = cents per point

I don't think I would ever use Velocity points for a Points + Pay ticket. The points are converted to cash at a rate of about 0.65 cents per point. Not worth it IMHO - better off paying cash and saving the points for upgrades or Reward seats.

Points and pay on a rewards seat!

The exact same rate is used. There is no real sweet spot - I would pay the taxes using money and save the points for another reward. Unless the taxes are just a little over $50 - in which case bringing them down to under $50 will save on the credit card fee.
