Heading to Rome in June and started to look for an accommodation idea. We will be a group of three couples that want to stay close but not sharing the same large AirBnB. We will be doing the tourist sites as well as an out-of-town day trip.

We would hope to be within easy distance to interesting choice of mid-range restaurants, easy access to the main tourist areas and easy access to main train station.

Anyone got any travel insider tips for finding a nice boutique hotel/pensione?

Have a look at Fifteen Keys Hotel, we stayed there, classy boutique hotel. A classy Hollywood actor was staying there at same time as well :)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

We enjoyed out stay at Villa Spallatti Trivelli - ticks all the boxes.

We've stayed twice at Hotel Torino near the main train station. We caught the Express train from the airport to Termini station, then just walked to the hotel. The hotel is quite near the National Museum and Santa Maria degli Angeli (doesn't look much on the outside, as it's part of the Roman Bathhouse complex the whole area is in - but Michelangelo did a great job inside). Another famous Santa Maria church is within easy walking distance.

It's also very near the A and B lines which takes you to many places of interest easily and safely, so long as you don't go in peak hour. There's a big bus station there to take you to the Vatican and Castel St Angelo - but the buses are full of thieves, who prey on tourists in the always crowded buses. Might be better to get a taxi instead of a bus.

If you have the time for a day trip, catch the train for the short trip to Ostia Antica, and spend the day wandering around the ancient ruins of a Roman town largely abandoned in the fourth or fifth century AD with monuments from the time of the Republic. It was fascinating and we thought it heaps better and more colourful than wandering around Pompeii (The DK Rome Top 10 book has a good map and guide to the place).

Renato

We've stayed at Albergo Del Senato just next to the Pantheon (in fact our room overlooked it). Also stayed at Navrona Gallery and Garden Suites which although listed as a B&B is a little more self contained with a communal kitchen. And also Sofitel Villa Borghese one other time. Probably our favourite was the Albergo Del Senato.

About 4 weeks until departure and still working through these suggestions.

Hi, we stayed at the boutique hotel below. It is hidden away close to the Spanish Steps and with 3 couples you would just about fill it. Fantastic hospitality and a wonderfully restored residence.

Ended up staying in a nice AirBNB near Porta Maggiore after cancelling a pre-booked hotel close to Colesseum.

As it turned out I had a couple of days in Rome before Mrs Albatross was to hit town, so this gave me a few days to be on the ground to check out a few places. The restaurants and cafes in and around Colosseum were so rude it put me off that area. I cancelled the pre-booked option and extended the airbnb in Porta Maggiore. For me this provided:

Nowhere near any of the main attractions.
It does have the ubiquitous city wall ruin each side of the street plus many trams and metro.
Out of the tourist attitude staff
Access to amazing local restaurants and local prices
No 3 tram took us directly to Travestere for when we ate there.

We ended up with a studio apartment with cooking facilities for € 40 per night in Rome's peak season.

Happy days and nights.

It;s really an amazing city and I'm sure we will be visiting there again.
