When did you decide to go for lifetime gold with Qantas?

Given the restriction on Loyalty Bonus SC earning NOT counting towards LT status and P1, and any SC from CC spend not counting, I can see a not too distant future where these +50% or DSC promos when they occur having similar restrictions....

If that happens I may have to re-evaluate things. It will probably just mean the time it takes me to reach LTG is longer than it would be otherwise as I will still use these promos to gain/retain status. While the promos count towards LT status I will want to take full advantage of them.

Like everything to do with flying it all comes down to who is paying for the ticket.
If your company is paying then LTG is easy to achieve for those who travel plenty for work; but it ends up costing the company (who cares?) much more than just flying the cheapest Business class option.

If you are paying out of your own pocket than discount J is way better than LTG. Just do the math.

I have LTQP, LTS. So de facto LTG. 6000 SC's away from LTG, so in no hurry as I am currently WP, will make WP again this year, which means it will be August 2018 before I soft land to Gold if I don't make it to WP again.

I'm totally self funded but able to afford the odd discount J so... best of both worlds? lol

I'm mostly self funded. 25 return discount J trips to LHR on standard SCs would get LTG from nothing if that is all the flying you do. Throw in some work trips to places and other travel and good use of SC bonus offers and LTG may be achievable.

......just to clarify, I mean real discount J (non-Qantas flights).

Life time status became somewhat of a bore for me when AA changed to butt-in-seat mileage for their million miler program. Fortunately I was about 35K away from 1mm so I finished that and looked for other programs.

You guys have almost convinced me QFF LTG would be worthwhile. However at 42% on the way to LTS and assuming I can continue to self-fund 600SC per year to maintain ordinary SG after 2018 (and the 2017 DONE4) , I would need about 15-16 years to get there. I don't think the retirement home and the medical specialists will allow extended absences in the last few of those years :mrgreen:

Happy wandering.

Fred

I'm probably only 20 or so months into actually flying QF, so also still a loooong way away. It'll be a few years before I can really make a decision to "go for it" or not.

Work gives me the majority of my flights, so makes it worthwhile to combine them with doing my personal travel mainly on QF as I look to LTG as a long term goal.
If that wasn't the case I'd probably do BFOD for Y and J flights given the amount of flying required for LTG.

Given the restriction on Loyalty Bonus SC earning NOT counting towards LT status and P1
I thought the loyalty bonus did count towards LT status but not to P1? I was told when I rang up that it did count towards LT status. Was I misinformed?

Also looking at the website just now: https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/earning-points-qantas-jetstar

"If selected, Loyalty Bonus Status Credits do not count towards attaining or retaining Platinum One status."

It says nothing about LT status

You are correct, it does count towards LTG.
I think RichardMEL may be confusing this with the trial underway of SC being earned via Credit Card by selected participants. That's definitely excluded from LT status.

Awesome, seems most just trip over it:D
Honestly thought people went for it. Wasn't sure when...
I think I'll shelve any ideas of LT goals at this stage and see what eventuates.

Sorry RichardMel I didn't recognise the quote but taking a wild stab it's the NZ movie "Boy?"

Thank you for the replies. Made for some very interesting reading and alters my perspective.

If you have SG or above status there's no rush to get LTG unless:

you're close
and/or you think your flying will soon slow down greatly but you will fly enough to get good value out of LTG
and/or you think LTG will get scrapped or goal posts moved significantly soon

Realistically I suspect most people who reach LTG will probably spend at least some years as a WP (or higher) or flying well more than enough to retain SG but not enough to get WP.

If you just retain SG each year it'll take over 20 years of flying to reach SG. That's a long time to keep that up especially if you don't start doing that when you're a young adult.

I didn't decide to go for LTG, it just happened. I knew I'd get there eventually. It's nice to know that once I stop travelling as much I'll get treated reasonably well those few flights that I take.
For statistical purposes, it took me 6 and a bit years to achieve it once I started seriously travelling for work and pleasure.

I am the same - i flew J 5 times a year on QF to US or Europe with work. Got LTG in those 4 years. Now using it as i don't fly in paid J with work anymore.

That line was from split enz. (Not boy as I recall)

Next Qf flight will get me to LT Gold...alas that flight is not til March :(.....taken 5-6 years to get there since I got LT Silver.

I discovered life time status existed after joining this board. It didn't change my flying patterns, as I was a 100% Qantas fan at that point, but was kind of fun to watch the status credits add up. Now we have decided to try other carriers internationally, it is nice to know we retain Qantas Club access on flights out of Canberra (many of which are economy only). We have gone from about 2,500 sc in 2015, to less than 600 in 2016 and looking like less than 100 in the next year - LTG will come in very handy for domestic flights!
