What's your Uber experience?

Had my first female uber driver on sat night too - she was hilariously excellent. We piled in full of beans and we didnt stop talking to her until she dropped us off. She loved uber and so did we.

more good support experience - tried to use a Free Trip but couldn't get it to take from the app, emailed support after the ride who quickly refunded the $30 difference back to the credit card and provided info on where I'd gone wrong.

uber black is quite a nice way to get home from SYD T2 domestic, avoiding the taxi queue :)

I hope the State Government regulates UberX's soon. All it will take is for one guy to be assaulted/murdered/kidnapped/raped in an UberX before they get banned entirely. I don't like taxis, but it's important that UberX users are protected under the law.

Plenty of assault by regulated taxi drivers...you can't regulate against criminal behaviour in any area of society.

The point remains that the public is protected against assault, even with uberX. Additional regulation does not change that fact.
I just think having something like a mandatory National Police Clearance would make it better.

Great to hear that. blue bird taxis arent exactly expensive to start with. What sort of car did you get with Uber?

they are cheap if they use the meter which they will during the day on short trips, but you will find it hard to get them to do that for trips to airport or on longer trips and definitely late at night.

Vehicles were Toyota Innova's, very clean and nice inside the ones that I had. Legian >> Airport was 60,000 rp, happy with that, charged to my card and no need to negotiate. Legian >>> Nusa Dua 80,000 to 90,000. Quite reasonable.

One can pass the clearance but it still won't stop an opportunistic driver (uber or otherwise) from doing 'something bad' that they think they can get away with.

People who are fearful of UberX, should be more fearful of regular taxi drivers because from what I read, it happens australia-wide - see my list below. Add to the fact that taxi drivers are often on the receiving end of violent crimes, why not we just ban all taxi drivers to protect both passengers and drivers??

The sad & sorry list of assaults and this is just the very very tip of the iceberg that happens in real life:-

Having a National Police Clearance requirement certainly won't eliminate all chances of assault and such, but it will prevent them. Besides, there's other consumer protections that should be enforced by the government too.

I think the feedback rating feature on Uber is one of the best ways of weeding out the bad eggs. Of course it won't prevent everything.

The taxi driver industry would be improved considerably by increasing driving experience requirement. I had to have held a driver's licence for 2 years before I could get a taxi driver's authorisation. I see in Victoria this is now 6 months. There is no readily apparent time limit for Queensland.

In terms of poor/criminal behaviour by taxi drivers, it is a very difficult situation with much temptation possible. Certainly not say anything about the cases previously linked. Just that as a driver I have had propositions made that, if accepted, would have left me without any evidence against a later allegation of impropriety.

One positive about Uber with regards to driver initiated assaults is higher degree (albeit still not perfect) of traceability of the driver. In taxis how often do people record driver and plate details of the taxis they get into?

Probably without cameras etc uber drivers face risks as well from passengers. But again there is improved traceability of passenger, fraudulent use of credit cards and misrepresentation of identity not withstanding.

Don't quote me, but I am pretty sure Uber already require this.

This!

Even if you leave your phone/wallet in an uber, there is a pretty damn high chance you will get it back.... Good luck with a cab driver!

the drivers are already subject to criminal checks. What more do you want short of having an in car inspector?
