Whats the point of Platinum?

if you are "forced" to put it overhead you should at least be guaranteed space.

Yep. I actually saw a guy, not long ago, place his whole families carry on above row 3 and then proceeded toward the back of the plane! I'm not entirely sure of the logic in that, but he must reckon there's some there somewhere!

Row 3 is main benefit for me, but my regular Sunday night flights seem to have an ever increasing number of Noddy No Status sitting in 3B or 3E. Very frustrating.

Interesting! I seem to have noticed the opposite;

1. VA are getting better at blocking off row 3 to WP +/- SG
2. No crew bags seen above the lockers in row 3 for the past 15 or so flights!

I think the idea is that they don't have to worry about stashing it near their seat, and then they just grab it on disembarking. Never mind what happens when they do both forward and rear door disembarkation. Didn't realise it happened in Australia though... thought it was a rude US thing!

I guess we do have US tourists here so it's entirely possible you're on the money. I find it just plain dumb.

That would make me want to take them out and carry them down to his seat and tell him he forgot these at the front of the plane.

Im such a B, pretty sure I would take it out and tell the FA that the owner when to the rear and left his bags behind.

Reading FF forums have given me a siege/prepare for battle mentality when Im sitting in the bulkhead (usually row 1 these days), Ive havent had to pull the B card yet but Im ready if I have to.

I was in 2F so it didn't bother me much. If I was in 3F, it just might have been a different story!

While I totally agree with the sentiments of pxs dumping bags in the J 'hat racks', the storage space above your seat is not "yours" and technically you physically removing a bag that is not your own is an offence.

Pretty sure last I checked there was signage similar to "Business Class cabin only" in the overhead. I think it was a Delta flight.

Yes it's for J pxs (normally), but unlike the seat, one does not have a specific allocated storage space so it's not "yours" was what I was saying.

And like many of societies niceties there are no 'rules' for many things. Accordingly if someone from row 30 put there bags in my row 3 locker I could go down, bend over and fart in their face...after all there are no rules saying this is illegal...but it wouldn't be very nice.

Actually there are, but, I don't see the point of taking a Trumpish position on this topic when it's about a reasonable point raised by Denali.

There's a law against passing wind?? Better tell that to the pigs that can't help themselves on many of my flights...

And what on earth is a 'Trumpish' position?

For what it's worth, it actually happened on a Virgin America flight earlier this year, where I was in row 3. Keep in mind that on VX, row 3 is a paid Y+ product, with one of the selling points being "dedicated" overhead space.

Some clown got on and, without missing a beat, dumped his carry on above me as he walked past – while I was standing next to my seat. I of course pulled the giant roller back out and marched down the back of the plane to leave it with the offender... I mean rightful owner! Another passenger actually cheered. :D

(And to get back on topic: VA platinum gave me absolutely no benefits while flying VX that gold wouldn't also have!)

I've wondering right now whether to bother requalifying for platinum or trying to move up elsewhere instead... the only real benefits I find that are of use are:

  • Row 3
  • EY AUH first lounge
  • 3 guests in the lounge
  • 14% more points earned from flying than gold

Am I forgetting anything? There's nothing else that you get as a gold that spending some points won't make up for?

Is access to F lounge in AUH guaranteed for Virgin Plats?

We flew paid Biz Class last year to Europe and neither direction was it offered.

Have same flights booked soon so would like to know for sure if it is a published benefit?

I assume F Lounge in that home hub will be pretty neat.

I don't have enough posts yet on this forum to post the URL, but google Etihad first class lounge and from the Etihad site at the bottom of the page it says "invited guests":
We invite the following guests to enjoy the facilities:

Guests of The Residence
First Class guests
Etihad Guest Platinum member with one guest
Eithad Airways Partner airlines platinum members with one guest
Virgin Australia Velocity Platinum members with one guest

I fly through AUH in a couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to a quick stop in that lounge!
