5 years ago I planned to go to the US for a golf tournement at the end of a holiday in Europe. I had a J ticket booked. I changed my mind and decided to head home instead and being the stubborn so and so that I am I was determined to come home in J and flew ATH - AMM- DXB - AKL- MEL - HBA.

I was at a conference once in the US and planned to go on a trekking tour in Nepal after that, but the time I needed to join the tour was tight, so I couldn't go back across the dateline and needed to keep going round the world, so my trip was MSY-ORD-JFK-LHR-FRA-HKG-BKK-KTM
The whole trip took about 53 hrs, but I got there in time for my tour.

Back in the good old US Airways Star Alliance award days, travelling during Xmas/NY peak, I needed to get from Sydney to Buenos Aires. Luckily found 2 scenic routes in F/J.

SYD-BKK-FRA-BOG-SCL-EZE
EZE-JNB-HKG-BKK-SYD

Not the most flights I have taken to get to a destination, but one of the craziest was the following all without leaving airside (except briefly at EWR and LAX due to intl arrivals).

AKL-SIN-BKK-SIN-EWR-SIN-BKK-SIN-AKL-LAX-SFO.

The flights to and from EWR were inaugural flights. I missed the inaugural AKL-SFO but flew the 2nd SFO-AKL.

I just remembered I also once few NYC-CDG except I went LGA-CVG-LAX-FRA-LHR-CDG. Then later that trip, to get home I flew MAD-BCN-LHR-FRA-BKK-SYD.

Apparently “why fly direct when you can connect” applies strongly to me… 😅

Moving London to Brisbane next year.

So far the journey is clocking in at 109 days via LHR RIO GRU IGU IGR EZE LIM CJC SCL BRC EZE UIO SJO MEX TUS AUS MSY MIA BGI MIA MCO CLT BNA JFK SIN BNE

I need a better travel agent.....

I am the boring guy we have taken the 1 stop route via DOH to BOS and JFK, also via DXB to SEA, JFK, ORD, LAX and last week EWR-SIN-ADL.

This may be a little twist on the concept of largest number of flights taken to get to a destination and may well just be sheer stupidity, but my entry in this thread today is more ‘longest (unnecessary) flights to get to your destination’.

Due to the quirky region based nature of the TK award tables and the fact that I had some TK Miles&Smiles miles expiring, I wanted to use them for internal SE Asia travel over the Xmas period. Either CGK-SIN, or SIN-MNL were the routes I wanted. TK miles can be used on *A airlines so SQ or TG were what I was hoping for. Not surprisingly, no SQ award seats left for when I wanted to travel, but there were two options with TG: both required ‘one night in Bangkok’ and the timings weren’t great.

But… the TK search engine actually threw up options to fly via IST as well, and for the same cost as flights wholly within the Asian award region. Giddy up. Why fly direct when you can connect?

So, I’m flying TK J from SIN-MNL via IST for 30K miles one way, plus SGD500. What should be a just under 4 hour trip is now going to take just over 37 hours and cost a little bit more than a Y seat, plus burn more miles than I wanted to use but hey, I wasn’t going to fly that far in Y. (would’ve been 15K miles)

My journey will be:
- Overnight on the older B777 2-3-2 J product which is a long enough flight to get a great sleep;
- 14 hours (mostly daylight) on the ground in IST;
- Overnight on the newer B787-9 1-2-1 seats to MNL for another nights sleep.
- Rejoin with the family at MNL (flying the sensible KUL-MNL direct leg that morning) and then on with holidays in the Taal region south of greater Manila.

Don’t tell Greta.

Currently considering whether to use the TK provided hotel in Istanbul or not. They’re not generally well located in the city, plus we were there in May this year, so perhaps not. My other option being scoped is to catch a (relatively) cheap domestic J flight from IST and go somewhere like Izmir for a walk around and a coffee, then fly back to take the IST-MNL leg… a mini status run.

Crazy, certainly, but I’m looking forward to it.

Thank you so much to one and all regarding your posts in this thread. It’s been an eye opener. And I now understand a little bit more about the FF puzzle. Just as an aside what have been some of your more extreme trips where you have stitched together flights in getting from A to B.

My most extreme trip was a 42-hour marathon MEL-SYD-SIN-CDG-CPH-KEF to start a holiday in Iceland (the long haul Sydney-Singapore and Singapore-Paris legs were in Business, the rest in Economy). But I do recall reading a recent thread here (though I can't find it to link to it, sorry) where people wrote about much more extreme and convoluted trips than that!

being aware of the 'useful' hubs, KUL / SIN / DXB / CGK / HKG / HND

or trying to get near where you are going, like when i'm planning UK i'll also throw in paris / amsterdamn / madrid etc
