What's right with Qantas?

Thanks for all the responses. Some good points made there.

It is good to read positive reviews, and I guess it may have helped those whose judgement may have become a little clouded that Qantas is actually OK!

I'm really looking forward to my trip to Oz in 15 weeks 4 days (but who is counting!). :D

I'm sure it'll all go well.

Enjoy your stay 'Down Under'. You should be here right about the good time of the year for weather, ie, not too hot, not too cold:) Have a ball!

We always flew Qantas. We wouldn't think of anyone else. Until shockers. Two flights were forced to land after takeoff due to mechanical problems. Flights were left on the tarmac for at least 2 hours. Some return flights were unbearably squished, and we're certain the seats were made to be unbearably close. In short, we decided that Qantas was short changing us with exy prices for gruelling flights.
Speaking chances, you have the same chance of this happening on any other airline (in layman's terms). Would you not fly MH after they had 2, yes two A330's fail to reach Perth on the same night (one aborted take off, 2nd [replacement] turned around after engine failure).

The difference between Australia and Malaysia is that every mechanical mishap on QF is reported in the media (most of the times over the top), where as I did not hear a word in Malaysia regarding these 2 incidents on the same night.

I don't feel that QF has lost the plot as you have stated, more so they are fighting an uneven playing field in certain aspects, and the sometimes excessive media coverage does not help.

FWIW, I do not find QF to be the most cramped in Y, I think that goes to CX with their old A330/340 fleet, and service wise, QF is consistent and has done nothing wrong with me.

I guess flying is all a game of opinions and that is the beauty of it;)

Fly with QF in First and Business quite a bit. QF food up the pointing end is pretty good. Far more interesting than most of the Asian airlines and a little more sensible On the other hand, the old First seats are outdated and poor compared to SQ, CX and TG. The QF domestic food in Business makes most of the European and US airlines look like a joke. As are the QF Business seats. The US airlines collectively (exclude Continental) are dreadful even up the front of the plane. The European airlines aren't much better.

The advantage of QF comes when you are a Platinum FF. They do go out of their way to do the right thing for you, especially with reward tickets. The QF lounges are good (not the best in the world) but pretty good. QF also employs Australians (a big plus) which keeps people in jobs. Internatltionally, if I have a choice of airlines on a route (and I usually do) I would choose SQ first and QF second. QF are better than CX and the QF flight times more convenient than TG. Domestically QF are miles ahead. I have ignored middle east airlines as I refuse to fly with them in my comparisons.

QF is OK, but focussed on the pointy end of the plane. Y really is cattle class, but the other airlines are not flash either. I understand that Y class in SIA & Emirates is bearable on long flights.
QF crew are very good, but, I think, short in number compared to other airlines.
You will be lucky to have an entertainment system that works.
