Suddenly remembered this morning that I have economy flights booked to LA, and that I'm supposedly able to pre-order food now and get an extra dish that you can't get on board. But I've looked everywhere in the booking and on the Qantas website and although there are still articles up about it, there's no obvious way to order a meal. Has anyone else done this successfully for economy?

New International Economy

yes I have on qf35 mel-sin in Y. It comes up as an option under manage my booking. It is being rolled out on selective flights.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

What is your flight number and departure date?

Is there an automated reminder once the -7day date is reached?

No, just go to manage my booking. On board they weren't used to the change as they mixed up all the meals and special requests for the "extra" menu item. I put it down to teething problems.

Hmmmm..... I'm guessing there's a limit of a week in advance of flight in case catering selections change but if you book months in advance, are you going to remember -7days out?

Red Roo: I'm presuming this "passenger enhancement" is also aimed at cutting down onboard waste? Seems there's a bit of a wasted (excuse the pun!) opportunity to encourage passengers to avail themselves of this service.

personally...i would use my own calander(paper or electronic) with a reminder on 'such n such' date to 'book my meal'..maybe i'm too 'old fashioned', as i wouldn't have to rely on anyone else to 'think' for me/remind me...and helps me take ownership of the situation..this method also works well for other 'situations' in life :)

Customers should receive an email to the address listed in their booking 7 days prior to the eligible flight.

It's a Customer Experience initiative to ensure our customers receive their meal choice.

I set a reminder for myself on my phone for T-80 - those row 4 Y seats aren't going to assign themselves to me. ;)

Tried it recently on QF81 - my pre-order was never acknowledged on board and all the dishes available online were the same as onboard, maybe this sector is too short?

That being said I didn't mind the new meal service - the main portion has returned to a former more reasonable sizing and sits on a plastic dish straight on the tray, I was given a bread roll on top of this and a chocolate mousse for dessert which was delicious. Not really a fan of the chemical tasting cordial "pre dinner coughtail" but the hunger pangs were adequately staved off by weiss bars and maltesers followed by a snack of pulled beef burgers or vegetarian wraps (the wraps were ok but fairly flavorless).

We used this service on a recent BNE-HK flight, 12 Feb, which must have been close to the first flight it was offered on this route.

Our pre-ordered choice was not available to others who failed to pre-order. It was delivered to us as they moved through the cabin. We were right at the front of economy so I can't tell whether you get this meal quicker than you otherwise would. The meal itself was quite good and I found the overall dining experience quite impressive for economy.

I do not recall getting an email reminder but as a reasonably well informed, albeit irregular, traveller I made sure that I ordered my meal in the advertised time window.
