What value do I put on 5000 points?

I am booking a Round The World Ticket with QANTAS/One World. However, I may be asked to do some work which could potentially mean some legs may be changed.

So, in the end the client would need to pay for these changes and - as there is a cost of 5,000 points per leg per person, what value could I put on each group of 5,000 points?

Is there any past experience of this sort of thing?

(Total cost of commercial ticket + Qantas tax paid for award ticket) / number of points required for award ticket x 5,000

Nominal value 1-2c per point, so $50-$100 would be fair.

Depending on how you use them, I value QFF points at between 1 and 5 cents per point. So that would be $50 to $250 for 5000 QFF points.

Earlier this year I had a chance to change from SYD to YVR to SYD to SEA, which would have suited me better. But at $500 I couldn't justify the charge.

Others more knowledgeable than me will know but I don't think you can change legs after you have started the trip so you may need to follow that up.

Sounds like the OP is happy to give a bit of a freebie and charge a rate in favour of their client of between $50-$100.

Heh! yes. There would be 2 flights x potentially - 3 legs.... It would add up and I do like them as clients

That's got to be one of the best deals of the century. Spend $300 to buy 10,000 points which then have a value of ~$70 when redeemed on the Qantas website for flights and hotels.

Just to clarify, I believe it is 5000 points per change to the itinerary, no matter the number of changes - so if all the changes (3 legs as I understand it) are made at the one time, it should be 5000 points all up.

I only found out about that "value" when I had to claim on travel insurance due to cancelling flights. As I'd lost 10,000 points in cancelling some Award flights, the insurer provided us with $330 to cover those lost points.
