What the heck is "Lateral 46"?

Which means it needs to be diagonal across the barcode to be 100% effective in most cases!
A diagonal cross will still allow the barcode to be read as the reader will pick up the black and white lines irrespective of wether they are in a consecutive line or not. You have to black out some of the white space to render it unreadable.

Obviously I've now annoyed my luggage enough that it doesn't want to travel with me anymore.

I got a call from the airport letting me know my luggage had arrived 24 hours after me. My route was ADL-SYD-PVG-CAN, but my luggage decided to spend a bit more time in SYD, then go SYD-SIN-PVG-CAN.

What intrigues me is the "Lateral 46" tag. What the heck is that?

What's that other tag with the barcode on it to the left of the rush tag in the pic above?

I had a relative fly ADL-SYD-PVG on Friday and luggage didn't arrive either. It came 2 days later.

How long was their connection in SYD? What the ADL/SYD flight delayed?

No problems with that, my WP drink coaster disappeared last Tuesday from my bag flying BOM-SIN-PER-ADL.

The drink coaster serves no purpose when flying overseas. 90% of people don't write their details on it anyway so it doesn't help identify who the bag belongs to in the case where it's mishandled by an airline. You're far better off having a normal name and address tag on the handle & leave the drink coaster for drinking or solely for domestic travel if you're feeling lucky. You would of course just have a normal paper (thermal) tag on your case for overseas travel.
