What takes people from Qantas ?

Say what? They have already done this years ago, with much greater availability and the multiple can be much more than double. Have you heard of points plus pay? Why would they introduce another award type when points plus pay already provides access to every seat available on the plane and is much more profitable?
This is another plan, more likely to be about double points by the look of it. Classic Awards would become the equivalent of discount awards I expect.

*Whistles* Holy moley, was this just a call centre operator? Or is there a specific team that handle arrangements like that?
Dealt with the National groups manager (who I cannot speak highly enough of!) but it was those under her who couldn't help us out.. VA came to the party... Ideally we would love to stay with QF due to international trips we do, but how viable it will be is up to the powers that be.

Again - WHY? points plus pay provides awards and is more profitable to Qantas. Why sell a seat at double the points cost when points plus pay could get 3, 4 or 5 times the points of a classic award?

For me as the occasional o/seas traveller and a few domestic each year it is price and timing. Sadly Qantas doesn't believe South Australia warrants any o/seas service although 8 or 9 o/seas based airlines do. Codeshare availability minimal and has always been more expensive. Thus havent travelled QF o/seas for 4 years. Domestic is timing and cost.

Perhaps at 3,4 or 5 times the punters aren't buying but at only double they might have enough confetti

Maximising marginal revenue I guess, probably better answered by someone with revenue management knowledge.

Points plus Pay allows you to burn your points at a ridiculously low rate of 0.65c per mile/point on any available revenue seat - this is at best around 27.5% of the price they charge you to top up your points. At these prices I doubt many people would be using it other than in small chunks to get rid of balances or generate some account activity and if you were looking to just burn miles you would need to be innumerate to use all your points for this. It's doubtful that QF generates much revenue from this avenue, but in any case airline revenue management is always a balance of selling their inventory of seats at different prices/fare buckets, so its pretty obvious WHY they may do this.

The new award category would have more restrictive inventory than the P+P and allow QF to release statements in future about listening to and giving FFs "more of what they want", releasing more premium awards and put a positive spin on charging higher prices for releasing more pure award seats, when in reality it is similar to Marie Antoinette's supposed quote of "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" - when members complain about a lack of (mostly) premium cabin space availability, you release more but at a much higher price and tell everyone later that you have resolved the issue and listened to their needs. One of the other floated ideas is to charge more points for upgrades that will be confirmed earlier, so once again QFF appears to be listening to complaints and solving them by charging more.

Qantas have a long history of doing things that are the exactg opposite of what customers want, and claiming to listen. I fail to see why they would change now.

Just because sensible people don't use point plus pay doesn't mean people don't use points plus pay.
