What layout and class configurations should we expect to see in the Qantas 787?

oz_mark - that's my read as well.
Anyhow no doubt an update of that slide on Thursday.

Interestingly over on pprune which I occasionally peruse a detailed argument on why QF should get the 787-8s instead of JQ.
Basically - performance of 787-8 over 330 not enough for JQ to go through the type change etc, and given some issues with turnaround times and parking bays the 787-8 is a much better aircraft.
As always with pprune everything with a big grain of salt.

With the handles hanging off the ceiling like in a bus? Imagine taking off! They could call it tarzan class!!;)
Reminds me of a Flintstones episode.
Barney & Wilma are in First Class (the plane is a four "engine" - read 4 x pteranadon) and they are in big stone chairs (those pteranadons must have a huge power/weight ratio
They go looking for Barney & Betty.
Through the curtain into Second Class - everyone is on (stone) bench seating. No sign of them.
Through the curtain into Third Class - everyone is standing up (yes, with handles like a bus). No sign of them.
They see one last curtain with a sign that says "last class".
Through the curtain they go. There they are sitting on the leading edge of the wing.

Tell the Tiger Airways CEO that he could get some inspiration from The Flintstones! :D

Well the Jetstar & Qantas Domestic will be a 2 class, while the later Qantas International will be a 3 class Y/Y+/J

Jetstar's Boeing 787 set for Melbourne-Singapore-Beijing - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

For that reason Jetstar’s Dreamliners will be fitted with the same two-class configuration to match Qantas’ domestic needs, so that the Jetstar business class seats formerly known as Star Class will become Qantas domestic business class.
The Qantas 787s will be fitted with business, premium economy and economy class, Strambi says, and will be used for both international and domestic routes. “In the short term domestic is secondary but in the long term it’s a primary role.”
The Dreamliner will also replace the older Boeing 747s, which Qantas has already started to retire from its fleet – with the exception of the most recent models which are being upgraded with A380-style interiors.“Our long term vision for international is just two aircraft types, the A380 and Boeing 787, although in the interim we’ll use the 747 for quite a few more years yet” Strambi predicts.

“Internationally Jetstar needs the 787 in the short term and Qantas domestic needs it in the long term” Strambi explains, “so in the longer term we have the option to swing the 787-8 back into the domestic space when we retire the A330 fleet.”

I would take what you read with a grain of salt, QF getting 787s is so far away that the market changes in the meantime make config comments today irrelevant. Given Air NZ is a launch customer for the yet to be made 787-9, what they do with their aircraft may have a significant impact on what QF do with theirs.

I assume that the NZ787's will replace their 744's and 763's. It's 9 aircraft for 9 aircraft. I still think they will be a 3 class layout as are current 777's. It is a reasonable assumption that they are primarily going to be long-haul for NZ and they will keep a premium cabin. AKL - USA, Japan, China

Hang on a second... I thought we only had to endure those falling apart 767s because the delivery of the 787s had been delayed or did I get something wrong there?
Now reading all this up here I wonder- what the heck will QF use to finally replace those old rattlers? Surely, they cannot have aircraft in their fleet that are over 30 years old or can they? Taking a learning from their trusted OW partner AA, are we?

As the 787s go into JQ, the A330s will move across to replace what is left of the old fleet, which is already being retired.

Oh, that makes sense then. I had no idea about that- thanks a lot for the explanation! :D
