What is the most remote town/city you have visited?

Kumgangsan North Korea might not be the remotest but was certainly the most fortified place I have ever been. Like going to the moon and wondering if you will get back.

El Chalten, Argentina...beautiful hiking on the foot of the Andes.

Skardu in Northern Pakistan is as remote as I've ever felt. It's easy to feel insignificant in, say, Kakadu or massive sand dunes near Ghadames (Libya) too.

Have been to a few interesting places like Lake Baikal in Siberia, Saipan, Kashgar et al where the word "outpost" comes to mind.

The most god-forsaken place I've ever seen is Mongkla in Bangladesh.

If taking the definition of remote as being the furthers away from my home base, then I think that would be Lands End in the UK which is just over 10,500 miles from home according to Great Circle distances.

Bet you didn't spend 3 months there....felt like Gilligan.

Cant top that one JB747, only had
a few days there heading back from
the Arabian Gulf. Enjoyed a few quiet
beers there.

I came close. Great place :) best fishing in the world.
Dunno about fishing, but the swimming/diving was pretty good. I used to catch the occasional flight in a KC135, and got some nice F4 and A7 shots. Just a pity I didn't have the camera I own now. But 1981 was still Stone Age.

They now offer deep sea fishing trips. Very very cheap, and there is simply fish everywhere. Then you take it to the O club when you get back and they cook it up for free. It's amazing.

Oh and did i mention clay pigeon shooting? ;)

When I was there things were fairly hot with Iran, so amenities were in short supply. There was one yank who bought some grog at the PX, and then drove a large truck onto the reef, and watched the tide come in....
