I am just about to take the plunge into the USDM pool and I was thinking, what if something were to happen to me? You know, run over by the proverbial bus or the like.

I've only recently started my points portfolio, with points scattered across a couple of hotel groups and airlines, all gained by just regular bookings and cc's, but when you actually purchase miles with your "hard earned" it adds a different perspective on the value.

Although I'm trying to impart my knowledge to other family members, particularly Jnr#1 who has enjoyed some of the benefits of what I have learned, I'm a bit scared that if I drop off the perch, no-one will think about the little pots of gold points.

Can you nominate a beneficiary for points? I'm guessing not. Have you confided your account details and passwords to someone, in the event of?

I always wonder who would tell US (or QF) the person actually passed away? If something were to happen to me or SWMBO I would transfer or use the points and leave the account there...

I know people pour scorn obsessives like some of us try to maximise the value of FF points and think that the last thing on your mind when a loved one karks it is to worry about the FF points but although the airlines don't ascribe a value to the points they are an asset like any other and should be protected.

For example I have a potential 750K points across Amex and QF at the moment. That is in simple terms worth about $30K - that is more than I have in my bank account. I have yet to educate my family about what to do but I need to and my suggestion will be to book themselves a holiday 355 months after my demise in F :)

Firstly qantas will do nothing if you don't inform them. Secondly, the key thing is to empower your family to act on your behalf and to give them instructions. That way any use of the points is difficult (not impossible) to challenge. So powers of attorney and an instruction to take a holiday/transfer points. I'm not sure how a will would work because at least in qantas' case the points expire at passing.

The other thing to consider is partner lounge memberships. Do these get cancelled if the primary account is closed?

So you're going to die in F? As good a way to go as any I guess. ;) I hope you're wearing the pyjamas.

While we can delay some things I reckon asking them to wait nearly 30 years (i.e. 355 months) is way too long. Strewth they should do it as soon as possible to either grieve properly or celebrate as the case may be.

Serves me right for being so pedantic normally ;)

To clarify the advice will be to book themselves a flight in F scheduled to depart 355 days after my demise.
