What happens to all the grounded aircraft ?

There will be a small skeleton team based in AVV while the aircraft are there. About 2/3 of engineers are being stood down.

One media report ('Australian' I think) suggested that was 30, which is quite a substantial number in my book.

Just reading an article talking about aircraft parking. It stated that Brisbane and Melbourne have both dropped parking fees for the aircraft taken out of service. Sydney, predictably, hasn’t joined them. Brisbane has space for about 100, and Melbourne, 40. You don’t need to keep all of the runways and taxiways open when you have restricted amounts of traffic...

'Simple Flying' site asserts that BNE has not just reduced, but waived fees for stabling aircraft.

I read elsewhere that CASA was sharing some FAA (USA) directive recommending not using runways to park planes, and warning air(wo)men that the entire airfield with parked aircraft ought be regarded as (I assume industry jargon) 'a hot spot.'

BNE has got a brand new, unused runway. They can park 100's there. It wont be used for a very long time

Yes, although they’re still doing ILS calibration tests and parking up aircraft on runway 14/32. Was very eerie, and weird to not be told to hold or cross the Gold Coast at time xx coming into BNE.

VA9xx_ numbers are used for their freighter network. Not sure they are exclusively for freighters but all those I use are 9xx_ numbers. Eg: VA9563 flies daily MEL-PER 5am scheduled departure.

Correct. Not used exclusively for freight. I operated VA9004 from BNE-SYD on a charter flight for a church that were connecting onto their chartered DL flight just 2 days ago.

The 9xx_ flight numbers are also used for ferrying aircraft too.

I can't see why CASA would follow any FAA guidelines. Oz and the US are very different places, with totally different operations. Here we are pretty well totally shut down, whilst the USA still has substantial domestic operations happening.

A "hot spot", in their jargon, is a place on the airport (runway/taxiways) in which dangerous ground incidents have repeatedly happened. Aircraft taxiing beyond clearance limits, runway incursions, or infringement of clearance distances. Aircraft being parked in unusual spots makes that more likely...but only if you have other taxiing around.

That's correct; the cross runway, which was due to close after Easter, has already been modified for parking and won't be used again. The new parallel runway is still being prepared for commissioning (although commissioning it and actually using it for regular operations are two different things).

Calibration happening on 19R/01L just over the weekend. Stop bars on 19L/01R have now been commissioned. No more conditional clearances to " behind the landing (aircraft) line up runway xx behind".

I commented because you can't do an ILS calibration if the runway is occupied. GLS, on the other hand, is ok.

That is one of the really annoying things about Australian ATC...or more to the point, Australian states' ATC. The procedures differ depending upon where you are. Melbourne, used to use conditional clearances, but stopped a couple of years ago. That was a huge issue with an aircraft like the 380, where engine wind up was particularly slow. If I'm conditionally cleared to do something, I'll wind the engines up about 10 seconds before I need to move. But, if ATC wait until the landing aircraft has turned off at J before issuing the clearance, the chances of issues with the following landing traffic go through the roof.

Are you sure that's an FAA directive, given that a number of US airports have closed runways and taxiways to use as parking for grounded aircraft. (which they also did for the 3 days following 9/11 when US airspace was closed)
