What do you collect on your travels?

While I do the plastic Tesco bag thing my wife is a big fan of collecting the higher quality shopping bags from stores around the world in a variety of materials and yes, they're strong, long-lasting and great for memories...
Slightly off-topic, but I simply couldn't believe the price of groceries in Tesco/Sainsbury's when I was last in the UK. I thought we had it bad enough in Coles & Woolies over here.

Couldn't brave going near Waitrose in case it triggered a seizure.

I can’t believe how expensive the UK has become. I’m glad I’m on expenses

Son collects shot glasses (souvenir ones) so I always try and pick up one or two for him. We had a spate of art works at one stage but not enough wall space and getting to hard to carry and expensive piece back (or arranging transport). I don't do the souvenir type stuff so maybe a piece of jewellery from a local designer. In Bergen I bought an Oleana scarf (if you know Oleana you will know). I didn't have enough room to buy a cardigan unfortunately. If a place is well known for something I will often try to buy an example as well as long as it is pretty small and easy to carry. I remember SIL on a trip to South Africa bought a carved giraffe about 4 feet tall and carried it on the plane home. Not sure I would be bothered. 😁
And I have a friend who always buys a post card and fridge magnet - so whenever I travel with her, they are one of the first things we scout out.

Trying to picture the 4ft giraffe...

Balls of steel.

Kudos!

Surprised not to see anyone else mention this (unless I missed it?) but we collect Christmas tree decorations. Get a different one for each new location.

Most people keep a collection of something, besides their superannuation / nest egg and family heirlooms of course.

While travel instantly brings about the notion of souvenirs, what kinds of things do you keep a collection of at home from your travels? These can be things that you just get in the course of travels, other times you might make an effort to find and purchase these things.

I know a bunch of us don't collect anything at all, in the interests of keeping a lean home and less wastage.

For me, I am a horrible hoarder when I travel. I collect the following things:
  • Amenity kits
  • Pyjamas
  • Playing cards
  • Boarding passes (especially First Class boarding passes)
  • Airline pens or stationery
More as a matter of course and not specifically, but one day perhaps, but foreign currency (especially as it ages and gets replaced with new issue currency).

In addition, as I travel around, I collect on behalf of my father:
  • Hard Rock Cafe T-Shirts
  • Sew-on patches for cities or countries I've been to (these are getting increasingly difficult to find; even more difficult when you can't translate what this is in the local language)
My sister was known for collecting fridge magnets.
My wife is sending me broke :), apart from Fridge Magnets, she attempts to collect paintings depicting the town or country we have travelled too. i.e an oil painting of Train Street Hanoi, a painting of Bures from Fiji, the market and wharf at Port Douglas etc etc
