What do these staff sackings translate to?

There is an annoying lack of detail in this report, typical of Middle Eastern airlines' obsessive secrecy:

If the paywall kicks in, the article heading is 'Etihad Airways announces layoffs.'

Was it 50 layoffs - which, while extremely difficult for the sacked individuals would be a tiny percentage of the airline's employees - or was it 500?

Does it have any relevance to EY's agreement with and shareholding in a troubled airline that cannot make profits, VA?

Well EK have been rather open in announcing that while loads have been good this year, yields have been down significantly. Tim Clark said profits were down something like 75%, so I really wouldn't be surprised if EY were suffering in the same manner.

Back of office types like marketers and PR, business analysts, pilots and other flight crew, cabin crew or general administrative staff?

Where are these layoffs occurring?

This coming after the turmoil at Air Berlin and Alitalia this week, makes VA look positive in comparison

I have googled Etihad and Emirates financial state. Neither Airline appear to be doing very well. James Hogan and his second in charge are leaving Etihad in the next few months. I also read in Forbes about the financial problems and layoffs of Emirates. Etihad is doing better than Emirates, but the articles I have read (from Dec 2016 to Jan 2017) make for interesting reading. We are however, flying with Etihad twice this year, so will keep our fingers crossed things do get better. They have both been great airlines to fly with up until the last couple of years when standards appear to have dropped. This is due in no small way to the state of the UAE oil reserves. The government no longer has the masses of money to pour into the airline. I am not a business woman so may have some of this wrong, but I have read many articles which all say the same. Would be interesting to hear other peoples views as I may have the wrong end of the stick entirely.
