What Constitutes "Not Valid for Earn" ?

I have seen a number of flights posted as "not valid for earn". Given money has been paid and the points were at the time based on $ spend how is this justified. On one occassion early in the year I won a return fare but it still cost me as much as a discount fare in fees and taxes, money I parted with but no points on the portion I paid and more importantly no SC's although my butt was in the seat.

Generally prizes from competitions are in a fare class that won't earn points, as it's cheaper for the business organising the prize that way.

I guess it could depend who the points were through, ie citibank etc, also you said you won the fare, you may find it was donted by Virgin, so why should they pay twice? I dont know the full story, but there could be so many variables. Someone on here would know what the ticket class means, and should be able to help

In this case the prize was actually from Virgin direct. Don't get me wrong, I appreciated the prize, but I was a bit taken back by then having to outlay another $300 in fees (I actually won a discount). I thought I should at least get the points for the additional $300 I had to outlay. The SC's are seperate and I understand these recognise the frequency of flying so thought these should be awarded even if no points since I did fly.

I have seen other fares (not prize) marked "not valid for earn" but don't know why. They were likely discount fares whilst travelling with the whole family (too many flights too recall) but they were paid for and as far as SC's go the travel was done.

Do you know what fare type it was booked into?

Could it be a Z class fare?

For what it's worth, any nonrev (Non-Revenue) ticket is not eligible for points earn.

I guess it would come down to fare bucket in relation to the T&C's of the program.

A lot of programs have fare buckets that earn little or no recognition
