I am currently rereading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón while also reading Queen Victoria by Lucy Worsley. I love reading; soon, I will read Austerlitz by W.G Sebald, Stalingrad by Vassily Grossman, reread Doctor Zhivago, and read Collapse: The Fall of the Soviet Union by Vladislav M. Zubok and Turner & Constable by Nicola Moorby. The cooler months ahead do encourage reading!

Just finished a non fiction, "The Right Hand" by Phoebe Saintilan-Stocks as an audiobook via Libby (app from local library). It was interesting to hear the perspectives of chiefs of staff of recent world leaders. Features more chiefs of leaders on the progressive side of the ledger, and may have extra appeal for readers from a similar background. It was interesting to learn a little more about this role which is often far from front and centre.

I finished the Lost Apothecary - @VPS what was it that irritated you? It was an enjoyable read, nothing too deep.

I have also finished The Strangest Criminals. Really enjoyed that one. I've moved back into Ancient Egypt with another Wilbur Smith book, but this one is co-written with Mark Chadbourn. I have three of those to get through before I move onto another series I'm sure. So many books, not enough time!

It was a while ago now, but I I think it was the fact that she found that book in a condition that was able to be read even though it was over 100 years old. It just stretched the plausibility a bit too far for me. I also doubt that there’s many places in London that aren’t locked and haven’t yet been accessed.

I still miss the old Truth though..... :)

A former girlfriend of mine when I lived in Melbourne was a cadet journalist and then journalist for what was then Southdown Press; the New Idea, TV Week, and of course Truth stable. After starting off on the magazines she was banished to Truth by the editor Dulcie Boling for having the hide to go on a long planned overseas holiday when there was a journalists strike. The drinks at Truth were really interesting. Most of the journos were of a very high calibre, and they just wanted somewhere with a job where people wouldn't bother them. One of them showed us a D-Notice that he had issued to him to bury a story. They were a great bunch of people and very protective of my girlfriend in the workplace, given Mark Day was the editor. And yes, Heartbalm articles were sent in, none were created by the staff - although how accurate they were in the first place is another thing.

Depending on how it was stored, a book might have been fine for that period of time. Given it was abandoned in a secure, hidden room that was dry, I reckon it's plausible. The ability to read the handwriting of the time would be trickier I think.

But yes, lots of suspension of disbelief required for the story, but it was still entertaining.
