What’s your favourite souvenir?

SWMBO likes to collect christmas tree ornaments, I'm a little different, I try to get used number plates from places visited.

My favourite is this one that I got in Damascus in 2010, it dates from the thirties when Lebanon and Syria were a French Protectorate, There are only 2 known examples although the other one owned by musician Jimmy Fox (aka The James Gang) is black on white.

That’s amazing - fantastic memory

Good timing. In SA lockdown now on a freezing wet day. I bought two fluffy wraps in Helsinki that have an elk pattern. MrP borrowed one this morning as it's freezing. It usually sits on my chair in winter. I found him a pink bunny rug 😅 and gave that to him instead (WFH in a 3 hour team's meeting so not moving = cold feet) and told him it reminds me of cruises and holidays in Europe and I need those memories right now.

My Venice Biennale catalogues, purchased on my pilgrimage to the biennale every second year. Sadly it was delayed this year until 2022. I’m not sure I’ll be able to go next year if it goes ahead so I’ll have a gap 😔

Gosh, where do I start.

Hubby's might be the custom made Fender and Gretsch guitars he got when we visited Fender in Corona CA or the Les Paul he got in Memphis or his vintage Hendrix Flying V from Normans Rare Guitars on our last stop over in LA. Seeing a theme with him? Martin and Taylor is on his wish list for our next (when/if) USA trip.

Me? I like Christmas decorations because theyre easy to pack and somewhat useful and easy to pack away. I guess my favourite souvenir are the memories.

Mine are coins. One piece of local currency from each country visited. They're blu-tacked to the pantry door so a constant reminder of many trips to many places.

In separate lines are also the ~20 x €1 coins with the national sides displayed, as well as the 17 state quarters from the different US states visited.

I will admit that for two or three countries I did have to go online and buy a coin due to them not really being used in circulation anymore: pretty certain Vietnam was one example due to basic staples costing many thousand dong and everyone only using notes rather than coins. Every shopkeeper I asked had no coins.

I don't really have a favourite amongst them as they all represent something different, so just foreign coins as my souvenir.

My consistant souvenir from places I visit are books, usually on the history or architecture. But my favourite is my telpek sheepskin hat (not a wig) from Turkmenistan. Means I can also now do a mean Boris Johnson impersonation.

I wish I could borrow for my Melbourne lockdown walks… superb! My husband bought me a beautiful Dr Zhivago hat in Moscow for a birthday but when he went to pay the quickly told him ‘No American Express’ so had to pay myself…..!!😂😂😂

..and here she is… and I’ve realised the adjacent receptacles came from a hotel in Vienna (things just fall into my luggage…)
