Western Sydney Airport (WSI) Discussion

Now I only just skimmed through this but I note a few pages back someone suggesting general aviation including the flying doctor should be trnsferred to WSI.
The flying doctor. angel caae flights some transplant flights etc should all continue to use SYD because it is central to Sydneys main hospitals. The only major hospital close is Nepean.

Forgive me, I also forgot Liverpool - Liverpool Hospital - Home
Closer and more accessible than Nepean from Badgerys Creek.

We are verified as a Level 1 Trauma Centre – the only one current in Sydney – and we have also had the trauma component of the TACS Fellowship approved by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with 5 years accreditation (Post Fellowship Education and Training Program).

believe airport fees and customs/immi fees will be similar, remember WSI has been built as a full service airport, not a cheap LCC shed.

I would not be surprised if WSI comes out cheaper than SYD - newer airport, more efficient operation etc.

Current airport fees for users have not been published likely because there are commercial in confidence agreements between WSA Ltd and individual airlines - launch discounts etc etc.

I would imagine trauma/ER traffic would not be using fixed wing in the first place, we have these wonderfull pieces of equipment that can land on a postage stamp, the AW139!

Again Depending on traffic it can be quicker from SYD than WSI.
If I were a patient with a complicated Problem there are several Inner Sydney Hospitals that I would rather be in than Liverpool and Nepean.

Pardon my ignorance here but if you were headed for Westmead or especially Liverpool hospitals, wouldn’t Bankstown be a better option than WSI? Or are aircraft we’re talking about not be suitable for there?

WSI vs SYD for medical services is a bit moot.

Transplant hospitals in Sydney

St Vinnies - heart, lung
RPAH - liver, kidney
RNSH - kidney
POW - kidney
Westmead - pancreas , kidney
Children's Westmead - heart, lung, liver, kidney

So for example, you can't go to Westmead to get a heart transplant.

The organs will be generally come from any of the major tertiary referral hospitals and often regional hospitals.

The logistics of organ transport depend on the type of organ, the time critical nature of each organ, and the originating and destination hospital.
Heart lungs are the most time critical - emergency air charter, road with sirens.
Livers not as time critical but air transport often required.
Kidneys, if air transport is required, is "must fly" commercial air cargo.
Note that the transplant teams required to procure an organ harvest, often have to fly out to a donor hospital.
So transplant coordination and logistics is not based at any airport but rather rapid access to air charter whether fixed or heli, or commercial aviation.

BWU is major hub for Air charter and aeromedical patient transfers

RFDS is operationally based at BHQ. DBO and BWU. It has a fixed wing aviation contract along with Pel-Air with NSW Ambulance based at SYD.
Outback NSW emergency transfer might actually go to Adelaide
A lot of RFDS aeromedical transfers to Sydney actually land at BWU
That WSI is now open might give RFDS an additional option.

There are 3 rescue helicopter services in NSW and none of them are based at SYD
Northern NSW - Westpac rescue Northern based at LSY (Lismore hospital), BEO (Lake macquarie airport), TMW (Tamworth)
Southern NSW - Westpac Lifesaver based at LaPerouse helipad
ACT - Toll ambulance based at BWU and Canberra helipad (not CBR)

Interhospital Patient transfer
These are by Road ambulance, Rescue helicopter direct to a tertiary hospital with a helipad or a footy oval nearby.
