I'm doing a status run Cairns to Wellington 10 March 2020, arriving 2355, leaving 0650 next day. Everything seems closed except Subway and I don't want to go out drinking all night. Is there any problem hanging around the airport until the plane leaves?

My understanding is that the airport isn’t open 24hrs and is closed for the early hours. You might want to check and see. Personally I’d be either staying at one of the airport hotels or jumping in a taxi and heading to a cheap hotel for a few hours.

Well wouldn't check in for a 0650 flight open at 0350 [presuming it is an international flight back to Australia]? So may not be worth spending a couple hundred dollars for an hour or two lay down. Not sure about the lounge situation at Wellington however.

Airport is shut between 2 and 4 am for cleaning and checks.
There was a report somewhere that security lets people stay overnight in the seating area near the exit of international arrivals.
Check in does not open until 4 am and outbound security, immigration and QP opens around 4:30 am. Well this was the pattern a few years ago but I now tend to get to the airport 60 minutes before departure and still have some time for a quick visit in the lounge.

Thanks to all for their input. I've read that they may be lenient and allow people like me to sack out on seats on 1st floor, so I'll take a punt, as it's not worth booking a room for an hour or two.

If you're flying Qantas you're in for a big disappointment. Food offerings are paltry and if you want to read a newspaper now you'll have to go outside to buy one from the newsagent!

Yes but compared to the NZ KC you will find it quiet with lots of spare space, in the morning there is ample food for a breakfast and tea/coffee. The First Lounge or Business Lounge f&b offerings it is not, but sufficient for the need. The showers are roomy and often no waiting so for the OP no real need to have a hotel room for such a short stay.
