Yep, it's me again with another (yawn) question:

I bought a new laptop today. Awesome piece of technology, with all the bells and whistles. The nice man who sold it asked why I was upgrading and I told him I wanted something reliable for our flight. Something I could watch movies on if the need arose. He casually remarked that, these days - you can simply load your movies onto an external hard drive and plug it in to the plane's video interface and voila! I was mesmerized.

Can I actually do this?

There's sometimes a section on the IFE system where you can choose to display your own media using the USB port. I've been on a variety of aircraft and different carriers and have never got it to work. It's probably only able read to certain media formats..

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It wasn't an option on the virgin flight I took to LA recently. However it was a function on various Singapore flights.

I think the VA IFE can view pictures only IIRC. I tried once to plug in a USB and remember I couldn't view video files. This was J on the 777 so not sure if it has changed at all over time.

Agreed. I don't think I would be pinning all my hopes on such a wild idea either. Otherwise everyone would already be doing it.
